Abstract

작가 정신의 뿌리를 "American Dream"이라는 신화에 두고있는 Arthur Miller는 연극의 기능을, 고립된 개인들에게 이웃과의 유대 관계를 마련해주는 것이라 본다. "American Dream"은 미 초창기 이주민들이 품었던 소망스러운 삶의 기반으로서, 경제적 성공이라는 물질적 측면과 인간의 순수성이라는 정신적 측면을 지닌다. Miller는 개인과 사회와의 관계에 역점을 두면서, "American Dream"이 현실에서 실현되지 못하는 원인과 그 결과를 그린다. 전기 작품에서 Miller는 개인에게 미치는 사회의 힘을 강조하는데, 여기서 사회는 개인을 억압하고 왜곡시키는 부정적 요소로 나타난다. 이 속에서 개인은 자신의 identity를 찾으려 고투하나, 사회의 횡포 및 자기 이해의 부족으로 파멸에 이른다. Death of a Salesman에서는 사회가 "American Success Dream"을 신봉해온 Willy Loman을 파멸시킴으로써, 이 꿈이 통하지 않는 부패한 현대자본주의 사회를 고발한다. 한편으론, 자신의 현실을 끝까지 직시 못하고, 자신의 환상을 좇아 자살하는 Willy의 인간적 미성숙을 그려낸다. 후기 작품에서는 개인의 악에 초점이 맞춰진다. Miller는 현실에서의 부조리를, 인간 본성에 내재한 악의 요소가 표출된 것이라 본다. 따라서 그는, 개인이 자신의 죄 뿐 아니라, 타인의 죄에도 책임을 질 것을 강조함으로써 보다 차원높은 사회극작가로 성장했음을 보인다. After the Fall에서 Quentin은, 인간의 순수성을 골자로 하는 "American Dream"의 대변인이다. 그러나 그는, 자신의 이상이 기만적 환상임을 깨달으며, 인간 조건인 원죄를 수용함으로써 현실을 포용하고 생존해가는 성숙된 인물로 제시된다. 이런 Quentin을 통해 Miller는, 인간이 지닌 Cain의 속성을 서로간에 용기, 사랑, 용서로 극복해야 함을 강조함으로써 인생에 대한 vision을 넓히고 있다.;Arthur Miller's best subject has always been "American Dream", the foundation of wishful life cherished by the early Americans. It has two aspects, material and spiritual; they are economic success and human innocence. While describing the cause and effect of the "American Dream" which cannot come true in the real world, Miller, in his plays, emphasizes the relation of individuals with society. In his earlier plays, Miller focuses the influence of society on the individuals. In them, the political or economic situation of society oppresses and distorts the individuals' integrity. And they struggle against the society to keep their integrity but come to destruction owing to its oppression and their lack of self-understanding. In Death of a Salesman, Miller accuses the capitalistic modern society of destroying Willy Loman mercillessly who has believed in "American Success Dream". Also, he depicts the inability of Willy Loman to recognize himself. Willy cannot confront his realities to his end and commits suicide chasing his illusion. In his later plays, Miller focuses on the individual evil because he thinks that the absurdities of this world are manifestations of evil inborn inhuman nature. Therefore, he emphasizes on the individual's responsibility for others' sin as well as his own. By doing so, Miller becomes a highly developed social playwright. In After the Fall, Quentin believes in his ideal of human innocence originated in the "American Dream". But, he perceives that this ideal is only his deceptive illusion. And he accepts man's original sin, embraces this world, and survives as an experienced, mature man. In Quentin, Miller emphasizes that man has Cain's evil nature and that this should be overcome through courage, love and forgiveness by one another. By doing so, Miller shows his vision of human life deepened.
