William Blake의 시의 심상을 통해 본 Los의 시적 기능 연구

Abstract

Blake의 비젼(vision)은 인간의 역사를 낙원·타락·생성·구원으로 보는 성서의 패턴을 따르고 있다. Blake의 비젼은 인간의 인식적 측면과 직결되는 바, Blake는 이성적 인식은 분리와 분열을 야기시키는 타락이라고 보고, '상상적 인식'(직관)은 구원을 의미하는 통합과 일치의 원리라고 보았다. 따라서 Blake의 예언시는 타락인 이성의 지배하에서, 중심인물 Los를 통하여 잃었던 상상력을 회복하고, 인간의 분열된 총체성을 재통합해 가는 구원의 과정을 劇化하고 있다. Blake의 예언시의 중심인물인 Los는 '상상력'을 의인화 한 것으로 '대장장이'·'예술가'·'예언자' 등으로 등장한다. 타락과 구원의 과정에서 보여주는 Los의 詩的 機能은 곧 가장 바람직한 상상력의 기능을 정의해 주는 것이다. 또한 Los의 활동과정은 Blake의 시의 심상과 함께 움직여 가고 있으며, Blake의 심상들은 그의 시체계와 상호 연관되면서 Blake의 시에 일관성을 부여해 주고 있다. Blake가 말하는 타락은 Urizen과 그의 세계 Ulro로 대표된다. 타락을 상징하는 심상들인 'water·sea·cloud·smoke·cave·rock·worm·star·wheel·net·garment·veil·serpent·fire·winter·metal·chain·darkness·forest' 등은 모두 Blake가 악으로 본 분리·분열·추상화·이기(利己)·억압·구속 등을 의미하고 있다 타락의 상황에서 Los가 Urizen을 구원하기 위해 창조의 임무를 수행하지만, Los는 Urizen적인 오류를 범하여 타락한다. 생성(Generation)의 단계에서 일차적인 구원의 중개자인 Orc는 Urizen에 대항하는 혁명과 정욕의 '불(fire)'로 나타난다. Orc는 일단 악을 표면화하고, Urizen에 의해 십자가에 못박힌다. Orc의 죽음은 궁극적인 구원자인 Los의 기능을 예비하고, Orc의 불은 Los의 불로 전이된다. Los의 용광로의 불은 타락을 파괴하고 진리를 창조하는 이중적인 기능을 담당하고 있는 예술가의 창조적 상상력을 상징한다. 구원의 과정에서 'serpent'와 'garment'의 심상도 이중적 의미를 보이면서 재생을 내포한다. Los는 최종적으로 자신의 'selfhood'인 'Spectre와 화해를 이룸으로써 구원되어 예술가로서 활발한 창조행위에 임한다. 구원된 Los는 Christ와 동일시되어 나타난다. Los는 Christ적인 윤리적 행위와 설교를 통해서 잠든 England와 Albion과 Jerusalem을 깨워, '빛·보석·생명·성도(聖都)' 등이 있는 구원의 세계에 이르게 한다. Blake는 상상력을 매개체로 삼아 인간과 신을 일치시키고, Christ적인 Los의 기능을 통해서 예술과 종교를 일치시키고 있다. 따라서 '상상력'·'신'·'인간성'은 동일한 의미이며, 구원이란 인간과 신과 자연세계가 '하나'가 되는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 Blake의 상상력은 사랑·용서 ·형제애의 기독교적 덕목을 바탕으로 할 때 최고의 기능을 발휘하는 것임을 알 수 있다. 결론적으로 Blake는 상상력의 기능을, Los를 통해서 극화시키고, 타락한 인간의 구원은 Los의 예술가적인 기능과 Christ적인 윤리 적 기능을 통해서 이루어질 수 있음을 입증해 주고 있다. Blake는 시의 창작과정을 통해서 예술이 종교적 차원의 기능까지 수행할 수 있음을 시사한다고 하겠다.;In "the Age of Reason," Blake believed in the priority of Imagination as human perceptive ability. Imagination is, surely, the core of Blake's ideas and poetic world. Blake views that the Lockean rational perception is the principle of disintegration and division that is "fall" in Blakean sense, and that the imaginative perception is the principle of integrity and unity that is "redemption". Blake's Vision is based on biblical pattern, such as Eden, fall, generation, and redemption. Therefore Blake's Prophetic Books manifest the process of human redemption from the fall. Blake creates Los as an ultimate agent of redemption. As the central figure in his poems, Los is the personification of Imagination and comes out as Blacksmith, Eternal Prophet and Poetic Genius. In order to define the functions of Imagination, it is important to study LOS's poetic functions. First, the "fall" in Blakean sense is represented by Urizen and his world, Ulro symbolized by water·sea·cave·star·wheel·net·garment·veil·serpent·fire images etc. These images represent the natures of evil, such as separation·division·abstraction·self fishness·repression etc. In the fallen state, Los gives Urizen his organic form, but the result is Los's fall. Second, Blake is profoundly aware of 'contraries' which can produce unity instead of division. The theory of contraries is revealed in 'Generation' produced by Orc's revolution from Urizen Orc is the personification of the energy of revolution and human passion symbolized by fire image. Orc, unable to escape from the natural cycle, fails to achieve the Visionary world. Orc's sacrificial death prepares the way of Los And Orc's fire is transfered to Los's fire. The fire of Los's furnace symbolizes his redemptive energy, creative artistic Imagination. Los's fire destroyes errors and refines the truth, so Los has dual functions, destructive ＆ creative. In the process of artistic creation, Los suffers from mental struggles against Spectre, his own Selfhood. The final reconciliation between Los and Spectre means the redemption of Los himself and then Los is no more divided. Last, the redeemed Los is identified with Christ. His final function is to redeem the man and nature through the Christian virtues, such as unconditioned love, mutual forgiveness, and brotherhood. Christ-like Los thus manifests the identification of Imagination, Christ, and Divine Humanity. In this sense, Blake's redeemed world is the world of 'Oneness' among Human Beings, God, ＆ Natural World symbolized by light·jewel·gold·tree of life·Jerusalem, the sacred city images. In conclusion, it can be said that only when Imagination is based on Christian virtues, it performs the most creative and vital functions, and redeems the man ＆ even natural world. Therefore, it can be said that the world of Blake's art has a strong religious sense.
