Shakespeare의 이상적 군주상

Abstract

본 논문에서는 Shakespeare의 HenryⅣ, Parts Ⅰand Ⅱ와 HenryⅤ에 제시된 이상적인 군주상을 살펴보았다. Shakespeare는 영국 역사를 소재로 한 사극들을 통해, 그 당시 중세의 봉건주의 정치에서 Renaissance의 현실주의 정치로 변천하는 정치관을 반영하였다. 현실적이고 합리주의적인 Renaissance 정신은 정치에도 반영이 되어, 도덕적 명분보다는 실질적인 처세술을 중요시하는 현실정치(Real-politik)가 더 설득력을 갖게 되었다. 특히 15세기 중엽에 장미전쟁을 체험한 영국인들에게는 정치적 무질서를 피할 수 있는 유능한 군주의 출현이 절실한 염원이었다. 시대의 애국적 요청에 부응한 Shakespeare는 그의 사극에서 그 시대의 가장 이상적인 군주상을 제시하려 했다. Shakespeare는 Henry Ⅳ에서 HenryⅤ에 이르는 일련의 사극들에서 다양한 유형의 군주들을 통해 치자가 갖추어야할 여러 자질들을 보여준다. 수년간의 연구와 실험의 결과로 제시된 HenryⅤ는 앞서 부적합한 군주들이 보여준 결점들을 보강한 가장 이상적인 군주이다. 그는 도덕적으로 정당한 왕권을 물려 받았으며, 현실주의 정치에서 요구되는 실질적인 치세능력을 갖춘, 그 시대가 요구하는 이상적 군주이다. 그는 왕자시절부터 국민에 대한 이해와 책임감 책략, 판단력과 통솔력 등을 보여준다. 그는 후에 불란서의 왕위에 대한 권리까지 획득함으로써 정치세계에 있어서의 성공을 증명한다. 반면 HenryⅤ는 그의 정치적 성공과정에서 개인적인 미덕의 손실을 드러낸다. 그는 왕위에 오르면서, 현실정치에 도움이 되지 않는 개인적인 미덕을 버리고 왕위라는 직책이 요구하는 바에 따라 전적으로 공적인 인물로 변모한다. HenryⅤ의 이러한 변신은 Falstaff와의 관계와, 불란서 전쟁에서의 잔인한 행동에서 잘 드러난다. Shakespeare는 적법적인 왕권과 실질적인 치세술을 갖춘 HenryⅤ를 통해 가장 이상적인 군주상을 제시하면서도 공적 임무의 수행에 필연적으로 따르는 비인간성(inhumanity)을 부각시킴으로써, 현실 정치세계에서 실질적인 치세술과 개인적 미덕이 양립할 수 없음을 보여준다.;In this thesis I have stuffed Shakespeare's ideal kingship represented in Henry Ⅳ, Parts Ⅰ ＆ Ⅱ and Henry Ⅴ. The central image in these plays is a composite figure which Shakespeare builds up gradually through the series of the history plays from Henry Ⅳ to Henry Ⅴ. Henry Ⅴ is an appointed symbol of an ideal king, and the action of the play is directed to show him doing eve교thing that the age expected of the perfect king. With his unflawed, hereditary title he possesses almost all the kingly attributes. With his glorious practical virtues, courage, integrity, modesty, leadership, sense of responsibility and a thorough knowledge of human nature, Henry Ⅴ is indeed the ideal of the king who surely attains a great success. But we sense something lacking in this practical hero in his successful political action. The lack of humanity in Henry Ⅴ is revealed in the relation with Falstaff, an the bloody-minded action at the war. Henry proves that political success is dependent on the repudiation of all human values, and what is good in the world of politics, is entirely unrelated to and generally the opposite of what makes for goodness in the moral life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of Shakespeare's ideal kingship. The conclusion is that Shakespeare, suggesting the limitations of successful politic king, reflects his uneasiness with the values of a purely political world.
