Abstract

Faulkner는 전후 미국 남부의 현실을 Yoknapatawpha 신화를 통해 나타내므로서 보편성 있는 인물 유형을 제시 한다. 그가 사용한 언어와 기법은 기존의 전통과는 달리 작품속의 정신적인 긴장을 함축적으로 제시한다. 갈등하는 인간의 양상에 줄곧 관심을 가져온 Faulkner는 Compson 家라는 부서진 남부 가족을 통하여 현대 위기에 대한 비젼을 제시 한다. 이 논문에서는 기법을 통해 Compson 家의 비극의 양상을 살펴 보고자 한다. Faulkner는 The Sound and the Fury에서 다각적 시점을 사용하여 삶의 모습을 효과적으로 나타낸다. Benjy와 Quentin은 내적 독백으로, Jason은 표면상 전달이 가능한 독백으로, 그리고 Dilsey는 이 집안의 전체적이고 완결된 관점을 획득 하고자 전지적 시점을 사용한다. 본 논문에서 초점이 되는 것은 Benjy와 Quentin이다. 이들의 의식은 부분적, 또는 전혀 언급 되지 않고 단절적으로, 비연대기적으로 진행이 되고 있어, 전통을 계승하지 않은 독창적인 기교로 처리되며, 독자가 그들의 마음속으로 직접 들어가서 한 가정의 변천을 경험하고 있는 그대로의 삶의 모습을 관찰하게 한다. 또한 그들 중 대표적인 인물이라 할 수 있는 Caddy를 중심으로 긍정적 반응을 보이는 인물인 Benjy와 Quentin 그리고 부정적 반응을 보이는 Jason의 의식을 통해 Compson家의 비극을 알아본다. Benjy와 Quentin 두 사람에게 Caddy는 사랑, 따뜻함의 상징이다. Caddy는 Benjy의 욕구를 이해한다. Caddy의 가출은 원초적인 사랑을 갈구하는 Benjy가 받아들여 지지 않는 세계, 고정 관념이나 편견에 빠진 이해와 사랑이 없는 황폐한 Compson家의 비극적 모습을 보여준다. Quentin에게 Caddy의 순결 상실 의미는 결과가 치명적이라는 점에서 Benjy와 동일 하다. 그는 전통적 가치의 수호자로 자처하며 현실을 수용하지 못하고 과거를 되찾으려고 관념 속에서 투쟁한다. Jason과 Mrs. Compson에게 Caddy는 비난의 대상이다. 이들을 통해 비극적 양상을 살펴 보고 더 광범위하게는 현대 사회를 조명해 본다. 이와 같이 Faulkner는 주인공들의 비극적이고 파괴적인 삶을 그리면서, 인간이 궁극적으로 승리할 수 있는 힘을 부여한다. 흑인 하녀 Dilsey는 혼란 스러운 Compson家의 삶 가운데에서도 헌신적인 사랑을 주고 인내 하며 살아가고 있다. 이는 예수가 자신을 희생하여 인류에게 희망을 부여 했듯이 그의 종교적 신앙심은 현실 세계에서 긍정적으로 현실을 극복하는 모습을 보여준다. 흑인 목사 설교의 독특한 기법은 Faulkner의 주제와 기법이 하나가 되는 모습을 잘 반영해 준다.;Faulkner represents a detailed reality and portrayes universal characters through his Yoknapatawpha myth. His words and technique differ from the existing tradition and shows the mental tension portrayed in his work. To depict his theme of tension, Faulkner uses the mythical form and emphasises similarites and differences through the analogical inference and contrasting disposition of mythical allusions. Always concerned with the human being in conflict, Faulkner courageously tries to deal with the modern crisis by depicting the fall of the compson family. In Chapter 2, we have examined the techinglues depicting the aspects of the Compson family tragedy. Faulkner successfully represents aspects of life through the various points of view used in The Sound and the Fury, Benjy and Quentin narratives uses the inner monologue technique, Jason uses an externally conceivable one, and Dilsey uses the omnipresent point of view to obtain a throughout and complete point of view. The points of view that this thesis mainly emphasises is that of Benjy and Quentin. They follow through a fragmental, non-chronological order and use on unique technique which deviates from the traditional one. Thus, readers are enabled to go directly to the heart of characters, experience the change of a family and examine the realities of life. In chapter 3, we examine the Compsons' tragedy through the narratives of Benjy and Quentin, who show a positive attitude toward Caddy. Caddy represents love and warmth to Benjy and Quentin. Caddy understands Benjy's needs to the full. Caddy's running away from home represents a world where basic needs of love, like Benjy's, is rejected and the tragical aspects of a family's fertile situation, where fixed ideas and prejudices rule over understanding and love. In chapter 4, Dilsey offers a positive image of devotional love and patience admist the chaos of the Compson family. As Christ endowed humanity with hope through his self-sacrifice, Dilsey's faith shows a positive image of overcoming reality in the present world. The unique technique in Shegog pastor's sermon shows the process of the unification of theme and technique eminent in Faulkner's works.
