(The) Blithedale Romance와 The Awakening 연구

Abstract

Nathaniel Hawthorne은 19C 소설의 상투적인 여성상(purity, piety, domesticity, submissiveness)을 뛰어넘은 Hester나 Zenobia와 같은 여성인 물의 힘을 부각시킨 작가이며, Kate Chopin은 자아발견이라는 강렬한 욕구를 지닌 여성 인물을 통해, 여성의 모든 처지와 인간의 조건들을 밝혀준 작가이다. 본 논문은 The Blithedale Romance(1852)와 The Awakening(1899)의 여주인공을 중심으로 분석한다. 개인주의의 전성시대로 통하는 19C 미국에서 쓰여진 두 작품에서 사회가 여성에게 요구하는 한정된 역할을 거부하고, 개체로서 자율권을 주장하는 Zenobia와 Edna는 공통적으로 자살로 인생을 마감하는 것으로 되어 있다. 이것은 그 사회의 건강함을 묻는 준거가 될 수 있으며, 또한 여주인공들을 사회와 성의 현실에서 파악하고자 하는 여성론의 시각을 요청한다. 새로운 이상 공동체를 건설하려는 Blithedale에서 남녀평등이라는 이상을 실현코자하는 Zenobia는 남성의 지배욕구에 도전으로 받아들여진다. 작가는 사회에서 파괴되고 상실된 가치인-지적인 자유, passion, 건강한 활기-를 한 몸에 구현한 Zenobia가 이 사회에서 거부됨으로써, 그녀를 거부한 남성들 역시 여전히 공허하고 불모의 삶을 살아가는 것으로 제시하고 있다. 따라서 필자는, Hawthorne이 남성의 자유와 완성을 여성과의 관계와 이해에 연결시키는 중요한 방법으로 페미니스트의 작업을 성취하고 있다고 보았다. Edna는, 여성을 남편의 재산목록으로 보고, 또 사회가 여성을 생물학적 기능에만 묶어두는 억압적인 현실안에서도 자아를 발견하고자 하는 강렬한 욕구를 '느끼고, 규명하고, 따르는' 힘을 보여준다. 그녀는 인습과 기존도덕률에 저항하고, 남성 중심 사회에서 흐려졌던 자기의지를 발휘하며, 여성본연의 passion을 되찾는다. 그러나 현실에서 Edna는 자신이 만족할만한 여성삶의 양식의 부재로 고통받으며, 현실에의 부분적인 타협보다는 새로이 각성한 자아의 보존을 선택한다. 이 두 여성의 죽음을 현실에 대한 좌절에서 기인하지만, 결코 항복이 아니다. 19C에 살아간 이들의 포기하지 않은 목소리들이, 오늘날에도 자아의 위기를 맞고 있는 우리에게 귀중한 유산이 되고 있다. 두 작가는 결국 죽음을 선택해야 했던 여주인공들의 고통과 사회의 한계를 보여주는 동시에, 이들이 '인간'으로서 찾은 가치들; 지배될 수 없는 자아, 자유, passion과 활기를 인간이 인간이기 위한 조건들로 긍정하고 있다.;Nathaniel Hawthorne unusually threw light on the power of women characters such as Hester and Zenobia who are beyond the woman's stereotype in the nineteenth century. Kate Chopin focused on the woman's role and the obstacles confronting women as they attempt to fulfill their desire for selfhood in her novels. It is the purpose of this thesis to examine women characters in The Blithedale Romance(1895) and The A wakening(1899). In these two works written in America in the nineteenth century which is so called the heyday of individualism, two women characters who want to be an individual are forced to commit suicide. They reject the restricted roles of woman and assert their full autonomy as a human being. This can be a standard which measures the soundness of their society. The femine point of view which examines women characters in their social and sexual reality is required. Zenobia who is sexual as well as intellectual is regarded as a threat to the male characters such as Coverdale because of their will to control woman. After they reject Zenobia who stands for the value destroyed and lost to society, they remain vanguid and pathetic. This shows that Hawthorne achieves the work of feminist in the decisive way in which he links the liberation and fulfillment of male to his understanding of and relation to woman. Edna shows tremendous strength in discovering, defining, and following her natural human needs, despite all the social pressures on her to conform to a set pattern which regards woman only as a personal property of husband and only as a biological being. She resists the conventional morality and is reborn as a human being with her own voice, space, and passion. But she suffers from the absence of the satisfactory way of life of woman and chooses the preservation of newly awakened self by suicide rather than compromise to reality. The death of two women results from the frustration in the social reality, but it is not surrender but self-assertion. And now their struggle and life become the Precious legacy to us who confront the crisis of self as a woman. These two authors shows in their works not only the limitations of their society in which they lived but also women's suffering and power. They finally affirm as a condition to be humane the values such as an inviolated self, freedom, passion and vitality the women characters sustained.
