W. B. Yeats의 시에 나타난 Antinomy 연구

Abstract

W.B.Yeats는 인간의 삶과 역사 속에 내재하는 Antinomies를 해결하는 것을 시인의 의무라고 생각한 시인이다. 따라서 Yeats의 시 세계는 이러한 Antinomies가 완전한 미와 조화의 상태인 'Unity of Being'에 도달하는 과정에서 발생하는 갈등이 두드러진다. 시집 The Tower(1928)와 The Winding Stair and Other Poems(1933)는 그의 전 작품중에 Antinominal한 요소들-Primary era와 Antithetical era, Body와 Soul, Passion과 Wisdom-의 갈등이 가장 심화된 시집들이다. 본고는 이 두 시집을 중심으로 Antinominal한 요소들이 조화를 이루기 위해 겪어야하는 갈등을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. Yeats의 Antinominal한 요소들이 겪는 갈등은 그의 사상체계인 A Vision에서 명시한 "상대의 삶 속에서 죽고, 상대의 죽음 속에서 사는(Dying each other's life, living each other's death)" 상호작용이 모체가 되고 있다. 따라서 양 시집에 나타난 역사는 Primary era와 Antithetical era가 2000년을 한 주기로 Antinominal한 순환을 계속하고, 노년의 육체적 허약증에서 비롯된 Body와 Soul, Passion과 Wisdom의 갈등은 양 세계중 어느 한편을 과장하고 다른 한편을 소홀히 하는 방법을 사용함으로써 그 갈등이 더욱 조장되고 있는데 표면상의 거부 속에는 또다른 바램이 내포되어 있는 것이 특징이라고 하겠다. 그러나 Yeats가 이루려했던 'Unity of Being'의 상태는 현실의 수긍 과정에서 순간적으로 유지 되었으나 궁극적으로는 도달할 수 없었다.;The purpose of this thesis is to study the Antinomies in the two collection of poems, The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1933). W.B. Yeats maintains that the Antinomies are conspicuously immanent in human life and history, and he tried to solve the antinomies contained in all of his works to achieve a 'Unity of Being' regarded as a complete beauty and harmony. As is commonly known, almost all the works contained in The Tower, and The Winding Stair and Other Poems are a storms of antinomies such as Primary era and Antithetical era, Body and Soul, Passion and Wisdom. The purpose of this thesis is also in tracing back through so many conflicts and absurdities by the study of antinomies. The antinominal elements of Yeats's works are pointed out clearly in A Vision like "Dying each other's life, living each other's death" based on the thought of Heraclitus. Therefore, Yeats's view of history described clearly in both collections of poems is consisted of Primary era and Antithetical era antinominally by rotating in a 2000 cycle. And the next phase of Yeats's antinomies are expressed emphatically in Body and Soul, and Passion and Wisdom by elucidating the absurdities of their relationships. Conclusively Yeats was somewhat victorious in fighting against the absurdities of this world. However, he could not achieve the harmonious condition, the 'Unity of Being' eternally though he could get at it tentatively.
