Abstract
Preface' to the Lyrical Ballads ('798) is seen as a landmark in English Romantic Movement, of which the roots lie in the eighteenth century. Like almost all literary fashions, romanticism started as a reaction to the tradition of neo-classicism. And it is seen as a clear break with with the eighteenth century in terms of diction and subject-matter. Wordsworth gathered up isolated ideas, organized them into a coherent theory based on explicit critical principles, and made them the rationale for his own massive achievements as a poet. We can conveniently use the concepts in this extremely influential essay as points of departure for a survey of distinctive elements in the theory and poetry of the Romantic period. 'Preface' is essentially the product of an early phase in Wordsworth's career - a phase in which he was almost totally obsessed with the value of "natural response". Wordsworth led the reaction of feeling against form, that he prompted the shift from eighteenth century concept of poetry as mimesis, a reasonable reflection of nature, to the nineteenth century concept of poetry as expression, an impassioned product of the poet's mind and heart. Therefore, poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. Confronted with the vice of passionless artifice in a "poetic diction" which he abhorred, he chose the language really used by men in the humble and rustic life. In his characterization of ordinary men, including the rustic, the savage, and the poor, he sought to extol those broad democratic and egualitarian principles characteristic of the nineteenth century. Although its originality, as we shall see the purpose of poetry, it did not ignore completely tradition. He based himself on the tradition of Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton. It was revolutionary in that if involved overthrow of a formidable false tradition - the tradition of Dryden and Pope. Seen in historical perspective, the essay is a fascinating hybrid of derivation and innovation, of traditional precept and primitive challenge. Wordsworth's Preface deserves its reputation as a turning point in English Literature.
