Abstract

The International Theme which constitutes the basic frame work of Henry James's works is focused on the self recognition of an American who gains moral maturity through conflicts with the culture and values of the Old Continent. At this time, the hero obtains a more objective understanding of himself by finding a new image of himself which could not be perceived in his native country, through the experience of European society. Accordingly, the International Theme established with the European society as its setting is an appropriate theme and technique for understanding the problem of American identity. The problem of American identity is also treated in The Wings of the Dove which is one of James's later works. However, the difference between the New and the Old continents is presented within the view of characters morality and value system in this work. Milly Theale travels to Europe where she feels that culture, tradition, and more profound life exist, with the intention of bettering her own life. However, the European society that Milly encounters is not the scene of ideal life that she has been dreaming of. This society is one in which the duality of persistent pursuit of material profit and refined appearance coexists and prevails. Being incapable of grasping the duality of this society Milly is ensnared in Kate and Densher's plot to seize her wealth. The lack of insight in this instance originates from her 'American innocence', having not yet experienced the complex life of the Old continent. However, Milly displays the virtues of forgiveness, love, and self-sacrifice by inheriting Kate and Densher instead of revenging on their betrayal. This moral value of Milly becomes the impetus of stimulating Densher's spiritual regeneration and at the same time implies Milly's moral and spiritual victory over the corrupted European society. The origin of Milly's moral value embodied in the inheritance lies in her innate moral innocence. In this sense, it can be said that through experience, Hilly recognizes the limits of initial innocence and having reinforced her moral sense, matures to the stage of higher innocence. James defines the American identity by objectively evaluating the falsehood and reality of the 'American innocence' through the process of Milly's self-recognition. And then he presents the the higher innocence that Milly has acquired as the co-ordinate of of positive life to be aspired by the contemporary American society and the whole of Western society contaminated with materialism.;Henry James 작품의 기본틀을 이루는 '국제상황주제' ( International Theme )는 미국인이 구대륙의 가치체계와 갈등을 겪으면서 인격적 성숙을 얻어가는 자아각성 과정에 촛점을 두고 있다. 이 때 주인공은 유럽사회의 경험을 통해 자국에서는 볼 수 없었던 자신의 모습을 발견함으로써 보다 객관적으로 자신을 이해하게 된다. 따라서 '국제상황주제'는 미국인의 정체 문제를 이해하기 위한 적절한 주제이며 기법이라고 볼 수 있다. James의 후기 작품인 The Wings of the Dove 에서도 미국인의 정체성 문제가 다루어지고 있다. 다만 여기에서 신·구대륙의 차이는 등장인물의 도덕성과 가치체계의 관점에서 제시되고 있다. 시한부 삶을 살아가는 Milly Theale 은 보다 더 나은 삶을 위해 문화와 전통, 밀도있는 삶을 약속하는 유럽 대륙으로 여행한다. 그러나 Milly가 만나는 유럽사회는 그녀가 꿈꾸던 이상적 삶의 현장이 아니다. 이 사회는 물질적 이익에 대한 집요한 추구와 세련되고 우아한 외양이 공존하는 세계이다. Milly는 이 사회의 이중성을 파악하지 못하고 그녀의 부를 얻으려는 Kate와 Densher의 음모에 걸려들고 만다. 이 때 Milly가 보이는 통찰력의 결핍은 구대륙의 복잡한 삶을 경험하지 못한 그녀의 '미국적 순수성'에서 비롯된다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 Milly는 Kate와 Densher의 악을 용서하고 그들에게 유산을 상속해 줌으로써, 악을 선으로 갚는 용서와 사랑, 자기희생의 미덕을 발휘한다. 이같은 Milly의 도덕적 힘은 Densher의 정신적 재생을 자극하는 계기가 되고 있으며, 이는 곧 부패한 유럽사회에 대한 Milly의 도덕적, 정신적 승리를 의미한다. 여기서 Milly가 보여주는 도덕적 힘은 그녀의 잠재적 승리를 의미한다. 여기서 Milly가 보여주는 도덕적 힘은 그녀의 잠재적 심성이 표출된 것이다. 이렇게 볼 때 Milly는 경험을 통해 최초의 순수성의 한계를 인식하고 자신의 도덕의식을 강화시킨 후 '더 높은 순수성' ( higher innocence )의 단계로 성숙하고 있는 것이다. James는 Milly의 자아인식 과정을 통해 '미국적 순수성' 의 虛와 實을 객관적으로 평가함으로써 미국인의 본질을 규명하고 있다. 그리고 Milly가 획득한 '통합된 순수성'의 가치를, 물질주의에 오염되어 있는 당대 미국 사회 및 유럽 사회 전체가 지향해야 할 긍정적 삶의 좌표로 제시하고 있다.
