소외를 주제로 본 Light in August

Abstract

Light in August는 인종차별과 종교적 광신에 의해 소외된 인간의 갈등과 삶의 복잡성을 다루고 있다. Faulkner는 제한된 시각과 삶의 은폐된 진실을 이해할 수 없다는 점에서 미국 남부의 백인 우월주의와 오도된 청교도적 신앙의 허구적인 가치를 그리고 있다. Light in August는 가장 빈번히 읽혀지고 논의를 거듭하지만 이야기가 전개됨에 따라 단편적인 진실만 드러나기 때문에 많은 독자들에게 논란의 여지가 가장 많은 작품 중의 하나로 남아있다. 그러나 남부의 진실에 대한 다양한 양상은 Joe Christmas의 이야기를 통해서 생생하게 구현되고 있다. Faulkner는 Light in August에서 사회가 개인에게 강요하는 사회적 역할과 그것을 거부하고 본연의 자기 자신으로 돌아가려는 개인의 갈등에서 비롯되는 인간 소외를 강조한다. 동시에 그는 사회와 기인사이의 화해의 주제를 제시한다. 제퍼슨 주민들의 소외는 백인 우월주의와 그릇된 종교에 대한 편견을 기반으로 한다. 그들 자신을 다른 인종들과는 분리된 선택된 사람으로 생각하는 백인들은 그들 스스로를 다른 인종의 우위에 둔다. 이렇게 그들의 편협한 종교적 광신은 개인간의 사랑과 이해의 가능성을 파괴시킨다. Although Light in August is one of the most frequently taught and discussed of all of Faulkner's work, It remains one of the most troubling novels to many readers because only fragmentary truths are revealed as the story is developed. However, the various aspects of truth or reality of the South is vividly embodied in the drama of Joe Christmas. Faulkner emphasizes the alienation of Individual from tension between a private self and a public role forced upon him by the society. At the same time, he presents the theme of reconciliation between community and individual. The alienation of the inhabitants of Jefferson is due to prejudice of white supre-macy and mistaken religion. Thinking themselves as chosen people set apart from other races the white place themselves they willingly cut themselves from other races the whites place themselves above others. Their narrow-minded religious fanaticism destroys the possibility of love or understanding among individuals. Joe Christmas, Joanna Burden, Sinon McEachern are victimized by such social climate of the South. Most of the characters in Light in August are isolated and are blind to a hidden reality beneath appearance. They are spiritual cripples in the sense that they are unable to see the truth and participate in the communal life. Lena Grove and Byron Bunch are exception. They search for fundamental truth of truth of their life with an Intuitive Insight. They can be defined as redeeming characters. Therefore the writer suggests symbolically the significance of understanding and love these two characters.
