Go Down, Moses에 나타난 黑白人種 問題

Abstract

In the American South, the racial discord is an inevitable result of historical situations of this area. As a Southern writer, William Faulkner dealt with uniquely Southern materials with much emphasis on Black and White relationship, which has come to be regarded as one of his most important themes. A close study of this theme would be essential for understanding Faulkner's works. In one of Faulkner's later novels, Go Down, Moses, write's Perspective on this theme is well developed. Go Down, Moses shows his comprehensive understanding of Negro and mature view on Black-White theme. At the same time it illustrates this theme in numerous variations. Go Down, Moses looks like a collection of short stories, and the question asto its unity as a novel has been raised. Studies on Go Down, Moses and its unity as a novel have not been as great in number as those on other themes. This thesis attempts to find a unity in a thematic link of Black and White theme, and furthermore, to explain what Faulkner regarded as a most desirable relation between Black and White. The white hero, Isaac McCaslin tries to practice in his life what he learned from the wilderness but in the process his personal good will is overwhelmed by social force. Isaac has idealism on his part, but by his act of repudiation, of withdrawal, he disqualifies himself from making any effective contribution to the betterment of the present situation. Yet this is not in the least to deny Isaac's essential goodness or the quality of his idealism. Faulkner dramatizes White's trauma resulted from Black-White relation through Isaac. Furthermore, by relating Black and White theme with wilderness, Faulkner expands the Southern racial problem to the universal human problem. The black hero, Lucas Beauchamp is a character who can hardly be categorized into Black or White. Lucas achieves his own identity as a human being and also breaks through the racial barriers in the Southern community full of racial biases Faulkner presents a possibility of solving racial problems through Lucas and gives a universal touch to his search for identity as a human being. What Faulkner is trying to express ultimately by candid portraiture of the South is the basic problem for all humans.;미국 남부에서 흑인과 백인의 갈등의 문제는 노예제에서 남북 전쟁으로 이어지는 남부 특유의 역사적 상황의 필연적인 산물이다. 미국 남부의 구체적 사실을 소재로 하여 작품 활동을 한 남부 작가로서, William Faulkner는 이 흑백 인종 문제로 고심하였으며 이것이 그의 작품의 중심 주제를 형성하게 되었다. 따라서 흑백 문제를 고찰하는 것은 Faulkner가 그린 남부를 이해하는데 필수적인 작업 중의 하나가 될 것이다. Faulkner의 후기 소설 Go Down, Moses는 흑인에 대한 포괄적인 이해와 함께, 흑인과 백인의 관계에 관한 작가의 원숙한 성찰이 잘 드러난 작품이다. 그러나 단편 이야기(story) 모음집의 성격을 띠고 있는 이 작품은 그 unity가 논란의 대상이 되어 왔으며, 작품 전체를 유기적 관련 하에서 보는 연구는 별로 많지 않았다. 本 論文에서는 Go Down, Moses의 소설로서의 unity를 흑백 문제라는 주제적 연결점에서 찾아 작품 전체에 나타난 흑인과 백인 間의 관계를 살펴보며, 나아가 Faulkner가 지향한 바람직한 흑백 관계는 어떤 것이었는지 밝혀 보고자 한다. 백인 주인공 Isaac McCaslin은 황야에서 배운 대자연의 가르침을 실제 자신의 삶 속에서 실천하려 하나, 그 과정에서 그의 개인적 善意는 사회의 힘에 압도당한다. Isaac 은 고양된 도덕적 원칙을 지녔으나, 도피주의적 태도로 인해 현재의 상황의 개선을 위한 실제적인 기여는 하지 못한다. 그러나 이것이 그의 의도의 진실성이나 理想主義 자체의 가치를 부정하는 것은 아니다. Faulkner는 Isaac을 통해 흑백 문제로 고뇌하는 백인상을 제시하며, 나아가 흑백 문제와 대자연의 주제를 연결시킴으로써 남부의 흑백 문제를 인류 보편의 문제로 확장시킨다. 흑인 주인공 Lucas Beauchamp는 흑·백 인종의 어느 범주에도 속하지 않는 한 인간으로서의 identity를 성취함으로써, 인종적으로 분리된 남부 사회에서 흑백 혼혈아의 identity의 위기를 극복한 인물이다. Faulkner는 Lucas를 통해 인종 문제의 해결을 위한 가능성을 시사하는 동시에 그의 identity 추구 과정을 인류 보편의 문제로 승화시키려 시도한다. Faulkner가 남부의 구체적 상황을 소재로 하여 궁극적으로 추구한 것은 보편적인 인간의 문제였고, 따라서 남부의 흑백 인종간의 갈등의 문제는 인간관계의 왜곡, identity의 상실, 소외의 문제에 직면한 인류의 근본적인 문제인 것이다.
