Abstract
Today, a university and its library are confronted with diverse demands and pressures. There is scarecely any part of human knowledge which is not treated in its research and teaching activities. Throughout the world, an enormous expansion is taking place in the facilities, student enrollment, libraries, physical plants, and others. These manifold demands and pressures are nowhere more evident than the university library. With increased student enrollment and specialization of knowledge, demands made upon the library by faculties, students, and administrators exceed far more than the most abundantly funded and excellently managed academic library can hope to meet. Consequently, cooperation among libraries has been taken up as librarians strive to find solution to the situation. A number of co-operative projects have been carries out successfully and actively in advanced countries. Co-operation, in fact, is more desirable in a country like Korea where library budget is far limited. Nevertheless, no program of considerable nature has been set forth except basic interlibrary loan, because it has been only four or five years since librarians began to realize the need and Show the interest in this. This study aims to stimulate the interest of the librarians and the administrators in the co-operative ventures so that a workable, an efficient system of some sort be designed to meet the present needs of the Korean academic society. The study is intended to suggest a co-operative system especially suited for the libraries of Ewha Womans University, Yonsei University, and Sogang University which are conveniently located in geographical proximity. Chapter Ⅰ includes general background and brief historical surveys of co-operation in foreign countries. For general background, some of the important factors influenced on the co-operative activities in academic libraries are mentioned. Chapter Ⅱ- Chapter Ⅳ cover types of cooperations with detailed accounts on such special areas as interlibrary loan, acquisition, and storage. In each chapter, the existing systems of co-operations are presented and general problems are considered in relation to the present situations of three university libraries (Ewha, Yonsei, Sogang) in Korea. For conclusion, chapter Ⅴ contains several suggestions on the co-operation for three university libraries. The suggestions are: 1) Expansion of the existing interlibrary loan service among three universities. For this, it is desirable to provide messenger service, interphone system and exchange of the main entry card for recent materials. 2) Launching co-operative acquisition programs a centralized pool system is preferable to subject specialization. 3) Establishment of a new research center which would assume the responsibility for the research materials of three universities. 4) Development of an undergraduate library from the present library resources. Major sources of the study are drawn from the works found in Library Literature (1933-1972), Korean Periodical Index (국내간행무기사색인: 1960-1971), and the public catalogs of three university libraries.
