- Abstract
- The modern juvenile literature of Korea has been sprout and grown on the ground of peculiarity of her modern history.
The direct cause for the rising of the modern juvenile literature was the political - cultural enlightenment for the Korean people as a form of nationalist movement around the time of Japanese Annexation of Korean Peninsula.
The first juvenile literature magazine was 「So-nuean」 with Yook-Dang (Choi nam sun) as editor - in - chief published in 1908.
The first chapter of this paper (thesis) deals with the development of Korean juvenile literature for the past 60 years since the appearance of 「So-nyean」.
The history of juvenile literature had been webbed with hardship and ordeal by Japanese colonialism: that is, its growth had been unduly suppressed during the period of Japanese occupation.
However, The juvenile literature has tremendously changed in its form and contents along with such historical movements as liberation from Japanese reign (August 15, 1945), Korean Civil War (June 25, 1950), April Student Revolution (April, 19, 1960), and May Military Revolution (May, 16, 1961).
In 1960's it has settled down on the right track as a formal genre of literature.
Therefore the characteristic Korean juvenile literature has been characterized by nationalistic thoughts in addition to its original functions as educational and artistic media.
The remaining chapters are concerned with the analysis of educational characteristics, national consciousness (thoughts), and aesthetic characteristics.
