T. Williams의 작품을 통해본 인류애적 구원의 의미

Abstract

After World War Ⅱ, Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller won recognition as the two major playwrights of the American Theatre. Williams has centered his attention persistently upon the inner life of his characters whose difficulties are presented as psycho˘logical first of all. He has described the frustration and the despair that the fugitive kind has experienced. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the frustration and the possibility of salvation in the works of the early sixties. In The Night of the Iguana, Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon has been frustrated by the misery of human life. The spiritual Hennah helps Shannon to conquer his rage for the contradictory world. Shannon finds the love of God through the compassion and the belief of Hannah, a woman who offers him sympathy. Hannah tells us that we have to accept whatever situation we can not improve. And Williams makes us perceive the possibility of salvation through human contact. In The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore，Williams' poet figure in this drama seems to excape more successfully from the terror of death than the characters in his earlier plays. Chris is not destroyed by the cruel world and he has learned the meaning of silence, the meaning of acceptance. By staying with old Flora Goforth, Chris helps her to perceive the importance of a human relationship. He brings his aged friend through death, not merely to death, Mrs. Goforth comes to know that men can be a god-like being to one another. Williams turns his concerns from the refusal of life to the acceptance of the human situation. He emphasizes that despair and death are a part of life, so we have to accept and endure them. And we can recognize God's Love in new way and be redeemed through this god-like love and compassion for our fellow man.;Tennessee Williams는 인간이 인생에서 경험하는 좌절과 갈등을 묘사하고 있는데, 본 논문에서는 그의 변화시기라고 할 수 있는 1960년대 초의 두 작품에 나타난 좌절과 그 좌절을 초월하는 구원의 가능성을 살펴보고자 한다. Hannah는 Shannon이 신의 사랑을 인간 내면에서 재인식하고, 인간이 변화시킬 수 없는 상황을 그대로 수용하도록 한다. 그녀는 인각적인 접촉(human contact)을 통해 구원될 수 있음을 인식시킨다. The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Arymore에서는 죽음의 공포를 성공적으로 벗어났으며 세상의 메마른 요구에 파괴되지 않은 Chris가 구원에 대한 확신이 없어서 죽음의 공포에 시달리던 Mrs. Goforth를 영원한 평화의 세계로 이끌어 준다. Mrs. Goforth는 불완전한 인간이 서로에게 신과 같은 믿음의 존재가 되어주는 것이 중요함을 느끼게 된다. 신에 대한 거부보다 더 큰 죄악인 생의 거부에서 눈을 돌려 Williams는 절망과 죽음도 인생의 한 부분이므로 수용하고 인내할것을 강조하며, 동료 인간에 대한 연민과 사랑, 즉 인류애를 통해서 신과 같은 모습을 발견하고, 구원될 수 있다고 말한다.
