Bernard Malamud의 The Assistant와 The Fixer에 나타난 自我 인식의 과정 연구

Abstract

현대는 물질주의와 기계주의, 획일주의 등의 온갖 비인간적인 가치체계들이 난립하고 있는 혼란과 무질서의 시대라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 인간은 한없이 왜소화되고 몰개성화 되었으며, 소외와 고통은 현대인의 존재 조건이 되어 버렸다. 세계 양차 대전을 통해서 극도로 부조리한 폭력과 불의를 경험하고 난 전후 세대 작가들은 인간과 우주가 본래 지니고 있는 의미조차도 부정해 버리고 파괴적인 허무주의와 무기력한 도피주의 등에 빠지게 되었다. 그러나 1950년대부터 작품 활동을 시작한 Bernard Malamud는 이러한 혼돈과 절망의 와중에서도 결코 인간성에 대한 믿음을 잃지 않았으며, 각 개인이 스스로의 자유 의지에 의해서 최선의 행위를 선택하고 타인의 행위에 대한 책임까지도 기꺼이 지고자 하는 적극적인 태도로 사회에 질서와 정의를 가져오는 일에 동참해야 한다고 주장한 실존주의적 휴머니즘의 작가이다. 또한 Malamud는 American Romanticism의 전통과 유태적 민속 문학의 전통에서 모두 영향을 받은 "American-Jewish writer"라고 할 수 있다. Malamud는 그의 대부분의 작품에서 "Jewishness"를 가장 중심적인 metaphor로 사용하고 있다. 이것은 현실과 이상 사이의 깊은 괴리를 경험할 수밖에 없는 모든 현대인의 실존적 고뇌를 대변하기 위한 윤리적 상징성을 지니고 있다. 또한 Malamud는 schlemiel-schlimazel형의 인물을 주인공으로 등장시키고 있다. Malamud의 주인공들은, 인간의 삶에서 필연적으로 당면하게 되는 모든 한계 상황들을 상징하는 감옥(prison)의 상황을 경험함으로써, 자신의 진정한 自我를 발견하게 되고 타인을 위해서 자신을 회생하는 성숙한 인간으로 변하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 "고난을 통한 自我 발견과 인간적 성장"의 주제가 가장 잘 부각되어 있으며, Malamud의 두 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 The Assistant(1957)와 The Fixer(1956)에 대해서 연구하고자 한다. The Assistant에서는 주인공 Frank Alpine이 도덕적 혼란에서 생겨나는 自我 분열로 인해서 고통을 겪다가, 그에게 정신적 아버지이자 인생의 스승의 역할을 하는 Morris Bober와의 관계를 통해서 성숙한 도덕적 가치 체계를 갖춘 인물로 변모하는 과정을 살펴보겠다. The Fixer에서는 주인공 Yakov Bok가 자신의 Jewish identity를 거부했다가, 2년 반에 걸친 무고한 옥고를 치르면서, 그와 일종의 父子관계를 맺게 되는 인물들과의 관계를 통해서, 自我와 세계에 대한 성숙한 인식에 도달하게 됨으로써, 다시 그의 Jewishness를 적극적으로 수용하게 되는 과정을 살펴 보겠다.;Our contemporaries can be said to be in the world of materialism, the machine and standardization, in which inhumane values increasingly thrive on chaos and disorder. Every individual can not be what he or she is and has become an endlessly small human beings. Isolation and suffering have become the condition of existence. The post-war generation writers, who have experienced the extremely absurd violence and injust ice through the two World Wars, trend to disregard the essential meaning of mankind and the universe. And they fall into destructive nihilism and unable escapism. Bernard Malamud, who has written since 1950's, however, never lose the be lief in the human nature among this chaos and despair. He is, in some sense, the writer of existential human ism. Because he proclaims that all the individuals must choose the best behavior wi th their own free will, and assume the responsibility for other's action. Also Malamud proclaims that every individual must commit himself actively to the process of bringing just ice and order to the society. Malamud is a kind of "American-Jewish writer" who is under the influence of American Romanticism as well as Jewish folk literature tradition. He uses "Jewishness" as the central metaphor in most of his works. It contains an ethical symbolism which represents the existential agony of modern man, who inevitably experience the disparity between the real and the ideal. And Malamud uses the type of "schlemiel-schlimazel" as his main characters. These characters realize the true self- identity and develop into mature human beings who willingly suffer for others. But, before, they must experience the "Prison" situation, which symbolizes all the unavoidable human limitations. This essay is an attempt to study on The Assistant and The Fixer which are two important works of Malamud and imply the theme of "self-discovery and moral development through suffering". In The Assistant I will approach the process of self-recognition of Frank Alpine, who suffers because of self-disintegration, but who develops into a mature person through the relation with Morris Bober who is his spiritual father as well as his teacher. In The Fixer I will try to examine the main character, Yakov Bok who first denies his Jewish identity, but who reaches mature recognition of self and world through the father~son relationships, and who finally accepts his Jewishness again.
