Abstract
In recent years, A higher production rate of recorded materials and limited budget in most libraries presses the librarians who try to provide for effective library services. The present study aims at identifying the literature used by Korean historians and revealing the characteristics of the literature. The characteristics of literature was analysed in terms of the physical form of the literature, the language and place of publication of materials, the age, the distribution of the journal used, and the subjects of literature. In order to Identify any differences in the literature used by historians due to the difference in the periods studied, Korean history was divided into the Ancient, the Medieval, the Modern, and the Contemporary. The method of investigation adopted is citation analysis that is the study of citations appearing in footnotes of journal articles. Five journals, recognized as the leading titles in the field of Korean history, were chosen for the sources. The citation counted were drawn from the 138 original research papers on the Korean history which appeared in the issues of the journals of 1975 through 1977. The summary results of this study are as follows: (1) Korean historians make much more use of non-serial publications, especially monographs, than of serials, and the ratio of cited monographs and journals was 52.6% : 31.3%. (2) 75.6% of all citations had been published in the Korea and the proportion of materials published abroad was 24.4%. (3) The most important language for Korean historians is Korean, citations of korean sources accounting for 70.1% of the total. The secondary ones are Japanese(16.5%), English(8.3%), Chinese(4.4%), and other languages (0.7%). (4) The 'half-life' of history literature vary considerably from one period to another. The 'half-life' is 9.7 years for the Ancient 35.3 years for the Medieval, 38.4 years for the Modern, 45years for the Contemporary. (5) The results of analysis by journal title suggest a significant concentration of periodical use on a 'core' journals. In the Ancient, 165 titles had been cited, and the 42 top ranking titles provided 77.1% of the citations. In the Medieval, 55 title had been cited, and the top 12 titles provided 70% of the citations. (6) Self-citation ratio of history journal is relatively low, accounting for 46.6%. Literature of other subjects were used in order of dependence, Archeology, Arts, Science (general), Anthropology.
