Abstract

벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten 1913∼1976)은 20세기 영국의 대표적인 작곡가이며, 피아니스트이자 지휘자로서 퍼셀(Henry Purcell 1659∼1695)이후에 17∼19세기에 침체했던 영국음악을 부흥시킨 인물이다. 그는 영국 오페라단과 Aldeburgh Festival을 창립하였으며 성악곡, 오페라, 관현악곡, 합창음악, 영화음악 등 여러 장르의 음악을 통해 그의 뛰어난 음악성을 보여주었다. 브리튼은 특히, 인간의 소리에 깊은 애정을 가져 100곡 이상의 성악 작품을 작곡함으로서, 당시 영국가곡의 새로운 형태를 구축하였으며, 오페라「피터 그라임즈」(Peter Grimes, op.33)를 통하여 영국오페라의 기틀을 형성함으로서 오페라의 발전에도 크게 기여하였다. 그의 음악양식은 영국의 전통 음악 위에 20세기의 다양한 기법들을 절충적으로 사용하는 경향으로서, 이전 시대의 작곡자에게서 영향 받은 여러 양식을 브리튼 자신만의 독창적인 음악 어법으로 개발하였다. 한편 브리튼은 성악곡의 작곡에 있어서 퍼셀의 이상을 이어받아 가사와 음악을 결합시키는데 중점을 둠으로서 영국음악의 전통을 고수하였으며, 또한 12음 기법적인 요소들을 부분적으로 시도하면서도 전체적으로는 조성적인 범위에서 벗어나지 않으려고 했다. 브리튼의 대부분의 성악작품은 특별한 사람들에게 헌정되었는데 특히, 평생의 음악적 동반자였던 테너가수 피터 피어스(Peter Pears)를 위한 작품이 대다수를 차지하며 그에 의해 초연 되었다. 또한 그의 창작활동에 지대한 영향을 미친 동시대의 영국시인 오든(Wystan Hugh Auden 1907∼1973)과의 만남을 통해 영시가 갖는 아름다움과 시와 음악의 미학적 관계를 인식하게 되었다. 5곡으로 이루어진 피아노 반주에 의한 최초의 연가곡인 <On Island> op.11은 오든의 시에 의한다. 이 작품에서도 가사와 음악의 긴밀한 결합이 잘 나타나고 있으며, 전통적인 틀 안에서의 새로운 기법들을 사용하는 등 브리튼의 대표적인 양식이 뚜렷이 보여지며, 그의 창작 활동에 첫걸음이 되는 작품이라 할 수 있다.;Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) is one of the most remarkable composer, pianist and conductor in England who dramatically led to the development of British music in the 20th century, and, some say, the greatest after Henry Purcell (1659-1695). He established 'Aldeburgh Festival' and 'British Opera' and shown his superb musical talents through his own many works of opera, vocal music composition, orchestral music and cinema music. He created more than one hundred vocal compositions with sincere love and interest in the human voice, and succeeded in establishing a new type of British song. Also he made a great contribution to the radical progress of British opera through his representative work, <Peter Grimes> Op.33 He added various musical methods of the 20th century to the traditional British musical tendency and created his own unique musical style through numerous pre-existing works influenced by the composer in previous generations. Britten has mainly focused on combining the text and music which had been the major characteristic of Purcell's works, in order to keep the tradition of British music On the other hand, he tried many different ways of composition such a s twelve-tone method, but he has never deviated from his formative area. Most of his works have been dedicated to some famous people. On many occasions, the tenor, Peter Pears, who was the musical contemporary colleague of Britten, conducted the first performance of Britten's works. The British poet, Auden (Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907~1973) influenced Britten to recognize the beauty of British poetry and the close relationship between poetry and music. Britten composed his first song cycle <On This Island>Op.ll which consists of five songs with piano accompaniment, to Auden's poems in 1937. This work shows the typical features of Britten's musical tendency where the combination of poetry and music based on the traditional framework is remarkable, as well as presenting the cornerstone of his future musical works.
