「바람과 함께 사라지다」의 의상과 색채 상징성 연구

Abstract

In this paper I survey the dress and the color symbolism of Scarlett and Melanie in the movie "Gone with the Wind" based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell. In investigating the dress and the color symbolism, 1 analyzed Scarlett and Melanie's image as described in the novel, and examined how the symbolic imagery is represented through coloration based on the DVD reproduction of the movie "Gone with the Wind" originally produced in 1939. In her novel, the author Margaret Mitchell introduces two women, Scarlett and Melanie, whose respective image sharply contrasts with each other. To express Scarlett's young, vigorous, lusty, and vivacious image, she uses green to depict the character, clothing, and background on the whole. Black, which mainly expresses the death image of the mourning dress. Red symbolizes her fast and lavish image. On the other hand, gray is used to describe Melanie's sedate, shyness, and modest image while alluding to her gloomy atmosphere. Brown symbolizes her sedate and plain image in the novel. In the movie, green symbolizes Scarlett's overwhelming image of youth and liveliness as also depicted in the novel. Melanie, however, seems to appear consistently in gray-blue or purple dresses to reflect her image of modesty, sedation and dignity. Melanie's blue image contrasts with Scarlett's blue image in that the latter is used to hint at the omen to a tragedy to come. Red is used to express Scarlett's passionate and fast image. Black symbolizes death or mourning in the movie. Based on the color image described thus far, I have designed and produced clothes which best fit Scarlett and Melanie's respective image, one for each character. To express Scarlett's vivacious and vigorous image, I have designed a green evening dress in a simple outline, revealing the shoulder. To add her fancy image, I have also embellished the dress with feathers, velour, laces, etc. To express Melanie's sedate and dignified image, I have designed a gray crinoline style dress with buttons from neckline to bosom. To express her plain image, I have minimized the use of ornament.;본 연구는 마가렛 미첼(Margaret Mitchell)의 소설인 「Gone with the Wind」와 이를 영상화한 시대극 영화 「Gone with the Wind」의 극의 흐름에 따른 Scarlett과 Melanie의 복식과 색채 상징성의 표출을 연구하고, 이를 통해 도출된 이미지를 적용하여 Scarlett과 Melanie 이미지의 무대의상을 창작하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구 방법은 소설 「바람과 함께 사라지다」의 복식과 색채 상징성 고찰을 위해 원작의 표현을 토대로 Scarlett과 Melanie의 이미지를 살펴보았고, 1939년에 제작 된 영화 「바람과 함께 사라지다」의 DVD 타이틀과 DVD 플레이어 프로그램을 이용하여 순간 포착한 영상자료를 중심으로 색채를 통한 이미지 상징성의 표출을 고찰하였다. 작가 마가렛 미첼은 소설 「Gone with the Wind」에서 각기 상반된 여성의 이미지를 대표하는 등장인물 Scarlett과 Melanie를 등장시켰다. 원작에 나타난 색채 상징성을 살펴보면, young(젊은), vigorous(원기 왕성한), lusty(활발한), vivacious(생기 있는) 등의 Scarlett 이미지 표현을 위해 녹색(green)이 인물, 의상, 배경 등의 전반에 걸쳐 사용되었다. 검정색(black)은 '상복', '죽음' 등의 상징으로 나타났다. 붉은색(red)은 Scarlett의 'fast(단정하지 못한)' 이미지를 표현하거나,'lavish(사치스러운)' 이미지를 표현하기 위해 사용되었다. 회색(gray)은 Melanie는 'sedate(차분한)','shyness(내성적인)','modesty(겸손)'등의 이미지를 상징하며 묘사되었다. 또 우울한 상황이나 분위기를 암시하기도 했다 Melanie의 묘사에 나타난 갈색(brown)은 'sedate(차분한)','plain(평범한)' 이미지의 상징으로 사용되었다. 의상형태와 소재 면에서는 당시의 유행을 따르는 실루엣과 장식, 광택이 나는 새틴, 벨벳, 태피터 소재 등을 통해 Scarlett의 '젊은' , '화려한' 이미지를 표현 했고, 당시의 일반적인 실루엣의 의상과 광택이 없는 울 소재를 통해 Melanie의 '수수한' 이미지를 표현했다. 영화에서 나타난 색채 상징성을 살펴보면, 영화에서는 색채에 따른 상징적 이미지에 관한 직접적인 언급이나 표현은 없으나, 극이 전개되어가는 상황을 통해 색채에 따른 상징적 이미지를 알 수 있다. Scarlett의 녹색의상은 원작에서와 마찬가지로 그녀의 '젊은','생기 있는' 의 고유 이미지를 상징하며 등장인물 어느 누구보다도 젊고 생기 있는 여성의 이미지로 표현되었다. Melanie는 거의 회색, 푸른색, 보라색의 의상으로 일관하며 등장했다. '겸손', '차분함' , '품위'의 이미지를 Melanie의 고유 이미지로 고정시키기 위해 영화 전반에 걸쳐 회색, 푸른색, 보라색 등이 사용되었다. 또한 Scarlett에게 푸른색은 '불길한 징조의 암시' 로 사용되어 Melanie에게 사용된 푸른색의 '차분한' 이미지와는 다른 의미로 사용되었다. 붉은색은 Scarlettt에게 있어서 '열정'의 이미지와 '단정하지 못한'의 이미지 표현에 사용되었다. 또 '죽음', '상복'의 상징으로 검은색이 나타났다. 의상형태와 소재 면에서 유행을 앞서가는 다양한 실루엣, 신체의 노출. 화려한 장식, 광택이 도는 새틴, 벨벳소재 등은 Scarlett의 '생기' , '젊음' , '화려함' 등의 이미지를 표현했고, 노출이 극소화된 변함없는 실루엣, 절제된 장식, 광택이 없는 울 소재 등은 Melanie의 '수수한' 이미지를 표현했다. 이상의 연구 내용을 토대로 Scarlett과 Melanie 이미지의 무대의상을 각각 하나씩 디자인 기획, 실물 제작하였다. Scarlett은 '생기(vivaciousness)'를 테마로 생기 있고 원기 왕성한 현대적인 젊은 여성의 이미지를 표현하기 위해 녹색(green)의 인조공단 소재로 어깨를 노출한 단순한 실루엣의 이브닝드레스를 디자인하였다. 또 화려한 이미지를 의상에 더해주기 위해 깃털, 벨벳, 레이스 등으로 장식하였다. Melanie는 '차분한 품위(sedate dignity)'를 테마로 차분하고 품위 있는 여성의 이미지를 표현하기 위해 회색(gray)의 인조공단 소재로 스탠드칼라가 달린 폭이 넓지 않은 크리놀린 스타일 드레스를 디자인하였다. 차분한 이미지 표현을 위해 칼라에서 가슴까지 단추를 달아주었고, 칼라와 소매단, 허리선, 스커트단에 짙은 푸른색(dark blue)의 선장식을 했다. 또 '수수한(plain)' 이미지 표현을 위해 의상에 장식을 최소화했다.
