Abstract
It can be argued that the function concept is the single most important concept from the kindergarden to graduate school. The function concept is a central one in mathematics which grows in importance as one progresses in the depth and breadth of one's understanding of mathematics. Thus, students will demonstrate understanding of the concept of function by verbal, numerical, and symbolical means and incorporate it as a central theme into their use of mathematics. The introduction of functions and graphs is a critical moment in mathematics education since it presents a setting with the opportunity for powerful learning to take place and since the concepts of functions and graphs are fundamental to more sophisticated parts of mathematics. Functions and graphs represent one of the earliest points in mathematics at which students use one symbolic system to expand and understand another. Algebraic and graphical representations are used to jointly construct and define the mathematical concept of function; consequently, functions and graphs can not be treated as isolated concepts. But if functions and graphs are treated as isolated concepts and graphs are not used to teach and learn functions appropriately, mathematical errors may be occured. Mathematical errors ordinate in a consistent conceptual framework based on earlier acquired knowledge and these errors thus contribute to the process of learning. So a good instructional programs are required to predict types of errors and purposely allow for them in the process of learning. In this respect, technology-based environment has the potential to enhance the understanding of functions and graphs, and to change and overcome errors. The purpose of this study is to investigate what types of errors may be occured in the test with respect to functions and graphs, and how errors related functions and graphs are changed and overcomed in the technology-based environment. In so doing, this study suggests following research questions : 1. When students learned functions and graphs in the paper and pencil-based environments, what types of errors might be occured? 2. When students learned functions and graphs in the technology-based environment(using graphics calculator and Calculator-Based Ranger), how previous errors which were occured in the paper and pencil-based ' environment were changed and overcomed? 3. When students learned functions and graphs in the technology-based envoronment(using graphics calculator and Calculator-Based Ranger), what types of errors might be occured? For the first research question, 119 high school students in Seoul and Chun-chon were participated in function-graphs test. Questions of test were classified by types of task, approach to task and level of task to identify graphicacy. Also questions of test were classified by types of error to examine students' errors. As a result with respect to types of task, students scored higher in graph interpretation and prediction task than in graph construction, translation and scaling task. With respect to approach to task, students scored higher in local and quantitative approach task than in global and qualitative approach task. With respect to level of task, students scored higher in elementary level task than in intermediate level task and in overall level task. With respect to types of errors, errors from conceptual image which was concerned with function concept appeared most frequent than any other type of errors. For the second and third research question, 2 students chosed among 119 high school students were participated in qualitative case study. After qualitative case study, errors from conceptual image which was concerned with function concept were disappeared at large by visual stimulus presented by technology-based environment. Specially errors from relative reading and interpretation were overcomed considerably by using CBR. Errors with graphing included students not noticing features that were displayed on technology-based environment graphs and naive interpretation of the graphs, which did not take account available algebraic and numeric information. In other words, mathematical errors concerned with functions and graphs were related to four different interactive roles of technology, specially servant and master, which were obediently carrying out graphing in the technology-based environment. But continuous interaction between students and technology allowed students to overcome errors occured by technology-based environment.
