김원일 소설의 주체 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 시대에 따라 변하는 김원일 소설 속 분단인식을 주체의 변화를 통해서 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 분단문제에 끊임없이 천착해 온 작가 김원일의 작품을 통시적이고 총체적으로 고찰하는 데에 있어서 주체는 사회와 끊임없이 조응하며 변화하는 상관물로 유효한 방법론이 된다. 사회라는 대상과의 관계에 따라서 달라지는 주체의 위치와 성격을 통해 분단인식이라는 담론은 규명된다. 김원일 소설의 주체는 작품의 통시적인 변화와 맞물려 변화해 왔다. 초기 단편 속 주체는 이미 분단 상황 속에 놓여 있음에도 불구하고, 그의 분단에 대한 인식이 의식 저편, 무의식에 잠재되어 있는 상태이다. 분단을 의식적으로 인식한 주체는 반공 이데올로기에 의해 호명되어 그에 철저히 순응한다. 이때의 주체의 분단인식은 사회에 의해 강요되고 있다. 하지만 주체의 변모가 여기에서 그친다면 비극적 역사를 극복하려는 의지가 보이지 않을 것이다. 김원일 소설은 분단 상황을 성찰적으로 받아들이고 윤리적 실천을 감행하는 주체를 보여주면서 분단 상황의 현재적 고찰과 타개방향을 제시한다. 김원일 소설에서 나타나는 주체의 변모양상은 시대의 상황과 긴밀하게 소통하며 그 속에서 살아간 사람들의 궤적을 통해 현재까지 지속되고 있는 분단 상황 속 우리의 모습을 되돌아보게 한다. Ⅱ 장에서는 주로 김원일 초기작에서 나타나는 분열적 주체에 대해서 살펴본다. 주체는 이미 분단 상황에 놓여 있지만 분단 자체가 자신의 문제와 근원적으로 연결되어 있다는 사실을 인지하지 못한 상태이다. 사회 속에서 끊임없이 패배하는 주체는 이상(理想)과 사회의 괴리 속에 분열되어 있다. 더 이상 사회에서 바랄 수 있는 이상이 없기에 분열적 주체는 다른 이와 소통하지 못 하고 고백시점으로 일관한다. 분열적 주체는 현실을 일탈하여 관념적 공간에 머무는데, 이는 사회와 괴리되어 분열된 주체의 상태를 보여주는 배경적 장치로 작용한다. 나아가 벗어나려고 하는 관념적이고 기만적인 공간으로 다시 돌아오는 순환적 서사구조는 분단을 지속적으로 망각상태에 놓여있게 한다. Ⅲ 장에서는 이념에 의해 호명되어 구성된 주체를 통해 강요된 분단인식이 나타난다. 마치 자신의 의지로 분단으로 점철된 험난한 세상을 살아가는 것처럼 보이지만 사실 주체는 철저히 분단이 빚어낸 이념에 순응하며 그 이념에 의해 구성된 주체이다. 구성된 주체는 더 이상 자기만의 목소리로 표현될 수 없기에 다층시점으로 자신을 그린다. 외부에서 보는 시선이 첨가된 목소리가 구성된 주체를 보여준다. 이들이 살아가는 공간은 이념에 의해 상당히 억압적이지만 구성적 주체가 현실에서 살아남기 위해서는 무조건 순응하는 방법 외에는 남은 선택이 없다. 과거에서 현재로, 국방군에서 인민군으로, 각 집안의 이야기가 교차되는 서사구조는 억압적 공간에서 분단을 기억하려는 구성적 주체의 비판적인 행보를 보여준다. Ⅳ 장에서는 잠재된 분단인식을 수면 위로 끌어올렸지만 그것이 강요된 것이기에 순응하기에 바빴던 주체가 분단을 성찰적으로 바라보고 자신의 분단인식을 승화시키는 단계에 이른다. 본 장에서의 주체는 윤리적인 면모를 지니며 자신의 신념을 실천한다. 윤리적 주체의 가장 큰 의의는 타인에 대한 대속성을 꼽을 수 있으며 이는 전적으로 타인을 책임지는 데에서 자신의 주체를 세운다는 의미를 내포한다. 윤리적 주체는 더 이상 대립적 분단인식에 머물기를 거부하고 한층 고양된 분단에 대한 객관적 성찰을 이루어낸다. 이 지점의 김원일 소설은 윤리적 주체를 집단시점으로 다양한 인물에 투영시키고 각자의 신념을 실천해 나가는 모습을 그려낸다. 분단이 일어난 당대를 거슬러 올라가 핍진하게 그려내거나 현재의 시점에서 역사를 다시 쓰려는 모습을 보이는 본 장의 작품에서 분단 현실의 직시와 그 안에서 새롭게 태어나는 생산적 공간이 엿보인다. 각 윤리적 주체들의 여러 목소리가 어우러지는 다성(多聲)성은 서사구조를 대화적으로 이끌고, 그 대화적 서사구조 속에서 분단은 객관적으로 조명된다. 김원일 소설은 때로는 반공문학으로 오독되거나 때로는 자전적인 가족소설 정도로 격하되어 왔다. 하지만 김원일은 누구보다도 꾸준히 그리고 성실하게 분단문제에 천착해왔고 한국문학이 가지는 분단인식의 지평을 넓혀온 작가이다. 주체담론을 통해 분단인식의 변화를 살핀 본 연구가 작가의 그러한 노력을 재평가할 수 있는 데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이고, 문학사적으로도 분단문학에 유효한 접근법을 제시하리라 기대한다.;This thesis aims to investigate division consciousness through the change of subject with period alterations after Korean War in the literature of Won-Il Kim. As always, Won-Il Kim's main theme is a national division in Korea, the concept of "subject" is a proper way getting into division consciousness to achieve consistent and total understanding of his literature. A "subject" changes with the society which it belongs to like effect of object to subject in general. In this thesis, a "subject" is the key to show the author's perspective toward the world and also has the mutable essence with its object, division consciousness. The subject in Won-Il Kim's novels changes from a disrupted one to a formed one and ends in an ethical one. In chapter Ⅱ, the disrupted subject recognizes that the world does not meet its ideal. Actually, the idealess world is caused by the national division but the disrupted subject cannot notice this situation. Therefore, its division consciousness lies hidden in subject's subconsciousness and this subject confesses its circumstance to readers. The disrupted subject escapes from the real world to unsubstantial place to fade away from the national division situation. However, the disrupted one never gets out of a circular narrative structure and totally forgets the national division to go round and round the circular narrative. Chapter Ⅲ examines a formed subject by division ideology through enforced division consciousness. Subject in this chapter is called by the Symbolic as the psychological term to be itself. Division ideology controls this subject to adjust itself to the real world. Following the rule of the Symbolic, which is division ideology, formed subject can survive under suppressed society. Won-Il Kim shows the form subject not only by inner voice but also by outer voice since this subject has originated from the outer world. Crossing-over narrative structure helps to remember the national division and gives a chance to the subject to critically outlook the division situation. Lastly, chapter Ⅳ dealt with an ethical subject to overcome bigotry of division ideology. The ethical subject establishes its subjecthood through entire support to others so it becomes the innovative way to overcome the national division situation in these days. This ethical one lets readers introspect the national division lasting up to now. Its division consciousness is sublimated by facing the reality and making the space productive. As diverse groups represent their own ethical subjects, the ethical subject is depicted with the group point-of-view and polyphonic narrative structure. Through this process, the division situation comes up to more objective than before. The literature of Won-Il Kim has misread as anti-communist literature or underestimated as mere family novels. However, he is one the sincerest writers to stick on the national division issue and has expanded division consciousness in Korean literary history. This thesis looks into alteration of division consciousness represented in Korean modern novels through subject discourse to commemorate and reevaluate Won-Il Kim's works. In this way, subject investigation is expected to be an useful approach for studying division literature.
