『로드 짐』에 나타난 말로우의 제국주의적 서사

Abstract

본 논문은 『로드 짐』에 나타난 말로우 서사의 제국주의적 성격을 밝히고자 한다. 화자 말로우가 작가와 거리를 두고 있다는 사실을 바탕으로 말로우의 서사로부터 비판적 거리를 유지하면서 말로우의 서사 분석을 시도한다. Ⅰ장 서론에서는 『로드 짐』의 화자 말로우에 대한 논의와 이 작품의 서사에 대한 비평들 그리고 제국주의 비평들의 논의를 살펴보고 말로우의 서사와 제국주의 문제를 함께 논할 수 있는 가능성을 살펴본다. 제 Ⅱ장 에서는 전지적 화자의 서사와 비교하면서 말로우 서사의 특징을 살펴본다. 말로우의 서사는 구체적인 현실을 사실적으로 나타내기 보다는 짐의 문제를 “보편적” 가치와 인간 실존의 문제로 이끌어 가는 경향을 보이고 있는데, 이러한 경향의 말로우 서사가 이 작품에 대한 평가에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 살펴본다. 또한 말로우가 자신의 서사에서 대화자들을 선택하고 있음을 밝히고 말로우가 상대하는 대화자들의 성격을 분석한다. 말로우는 보편성을 추구하면서도 짐의 이야기를 공유할 수 있는 대화자들을 선택한다. 말로우는 “다양한 관점”에서 짐을 탐구하는 듯 하지만 실상은 매우 선택적이고 한정적인 제국주의적 관점을 가지고 있음이 드러난다. 제 Ⅲ장에서는 “영웅 로맨스” 서사를 펼쳐가면서 파투산과 파투산 사람들, 그리고 식민주의자로서의 짐의 모습을 감추는 말로우의 서사 전략을 살펴본다. 말로우의 파투산 서사에서는 짐의 식민지 구축활동의 내용이 무엇이든 간에 그것은 “영웅”의 이상적인 자기 실현 속의 모험으로 간주된다. 한편 파투산과 파투산인들은 “영웅 이야기”의 배경으로만 나타난다. 주얼과 코넬리우스와 같이 제국주의 식민지 현실을 이야기 하지 않고서는 충분히 이해될 수 없는 인물들을 말로우가 “영웅 로맨스”에서 어떻게 그리고 있으며 어떤 잘못된 판단을 내리고 있는지도 살펴본다. 제 Ⅳ장 에서는 이 작품에서 보여주는 19세기 말 제국주의의 현실을 살펴보면서 말로우가 “보편적 서사”를 내놓고 있는 원인을 알아본다. 제국주의는 점차 자기 모순을 드러내고 있었고 말로우를 비롯한 백인 제국주의자들은 이러한 모순이 언제 어디서 폭로될지 모르는 혹은 폭로되는 불안 속에 놓여 있었다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 본 논문은 말로우가 자기 모순이 폭로되는 19세기 제국주의 현실에 대한 하나의 반응으로 “보편적 가치 성찰”의 서사를 내놓고 있지만 실제로는 제국주의적 서사를 재생산하고 있음을 밝히고자 한다.;This thesis investigates the imperialism of Marlow’s narrative in Lord Jim. Distancing from Marlow’s narrative, I try to analyze and criticize the characteristic of his narrative. Chapter Ⅰ summarizes criticisms on the narrator Marlow and narrative analysis in Lord Jim. It also explores the possibility of studying imperialism through analyzing Marlow’s narrative. Chapter Ⅱ explores the characteristic of Marlow’s narrative, comparing with the omniscient narrator’s narrative, and Marlow’s tendency to consider Jim’s situation as a “universal” and “existential” one. This chapter also will show that while seeking “universality,” Marlow chooses only white imperialists to share speculation upon Jim’s life and only the imperialists in this novel understand Jim. In addition, it is disclosed that Marlow seems to explore the figure of Jim in “a variety of perspectives,” in fact he has a limited and preferential perspective. Chapter Ⅲ analyzes Marlow’s Patusan narrative strategy for hiding Patusan’s colonial realities, its historical specificity and the colonial agent Jim. In Marlow’s Patusan narrative, the colonialist Jim’s activities are considered to “the hero’s adventures for realizing his dream” and Patusan is only a stage upon which Jim’s heroism can be played out. This chapter also explores the fallacy of Marlow’s telling of Jewel and Cornelius who can’t be understood without considering the history of colonialism in Patusan. Chapter Ⅳ investigates what makes Marlow narrate “a universal story.” Imperialists’ uneasiness about revealing self-contradictions of imperialism is reflected on Marlow’s narrative. This thesis aims at showing that Marlow, exploring “a state of a man’s soul,” reproduces an imperialist narrative.
