구스타브 클림트(Gustav Klimt)의 작품에 반영된 나르시시즘(Narcissism)

Abstract

본 논문은 19세기 말 비엔나 사회와 유럽에 팽배했던 예술가의 나르시시즘이 작품에 반영된 양상을 극스타브 클림트(Gustav Klimt :1862-1918)의 작품을 통해 고찰한 것이다. 클림트는 19세기 말 예술에 대한 관심이 높았던 비엔나에서 태어나 줄곧 이곳에서 작업하였다. 당시 사회에 대한 무관심과 염세주의적 분위기는 예술에 대한 탐닉으로 이어지고 있었다. 예술에서 인간의 존재 가치를 찾고 예술가로 산다는 것을 최상의 삶의 형태로 이식하고 있던 비엔나에서, 클림트는 예술가로서의 자부심을 갖게 되었다. 미술사적으로 볼 때, 이미 19세기 말 상징주의자들은 나르시시즘 창작태도의 기반으로 삼고 있었는데, 클림트 역시 이에 영향을 받게 된다. 클림트의 나르시시즘은 크게 두 방향으로 표출되었다. 먼저 나르시스적 피해인식이 작품에 반영되어 있다. 예술가들은 종종 범인들과 구분하는 특성을 자신들에게 부여하기 즐겨했다. 그들은 외부의 무엇인가로부터 끊임없이 위협당하고 있으며 그러한 요인들이 자신들의 창작을 방해한다는 나르시스적 피해의식에 사로잡히곤 했다. 19세기 말 이러한 피해의식이 여성에게 투영되는 경향이 나타났다. 즉 창조라는 과업을 지고 있는 예술가를 고통에 빠뜨리는 외부의 상황이 바로 여성이 되었던 것이다. 이것은 여성이란 존재는 성(sexuality)이 그 존재의 전영역을 차지하고 있는 것인 반면, 남성은 성욕과 같은 본능적인 특성을 정신적으로 승화시킬 수 있는 존재로 간주하는 편견이 퍼져 있었기 때문이다. 남성 예술가들은 성적인 것에 탐닉하는 여성으로 인해 자신이 창작에 위협을 당하고 파멸을 당할 것이라는 나르시스적 피해의식에 사로잡히곤 했다. 이러한 나르시시즘이 만들어낸 것이 팜므 파탈(Femme Fatal)이라 할 수 있다. 클림트 역시 세기말 팜므 파탈 이미지를 공유했다. 나르시스적 피해의식이 관능적이며 사악한 여성을 가공해냈는가 하면, 다른 한편으로는 나르시시즘이 독창적 화면을 구성하는 데 창작의지로 기능하기도 한다. 비엔나 분리파에서 활동한 클림트는 예술을 통해서 인간을 구제할 수 있을 것이라는 예술지상주의적 태도를 취했다. 예술을 통한 구제라는 개념은 비엔나의 염세주의적 사회 분위기에서 예술을 숭상하는 분위기와 맞아떨어진 것이었다. 클림트의 화면은 불만족스런 현실이 아니라 이데아를 구축함으로써, 이를 관객에게 제시하는 방향으로 이어진다. 클림트의 초상화는 이러한 이데아의 구현 방식의 일부를 보여준다. 클림트는 실제 인물의 특성은 배제시키고 이상화된 모습으로 초상화를 제작했다. 공간과 인물과의 구분을 없애면서 추상적 화면을 구축했고 다양한 장식은 과거와 현재를 넘나드는 형이상학적 이데아를 불러일으키기 위해 도입하였다. 장식이 단지 시각적 즐거움을 주는 것이 아니라 천재 예술가가 만들어내는 우주적 질서의 표현 수단이라는 나르시시즘은 이러한 작품을 창작하는 데 바탕이 되었다. 이렇게 이데아를 구현하는 나르시시즘적 창작태도는 그의 알레고리 회화로도 이어졌다. 크림트가 표상하고 있는 도상들은 단순히 사실적 문맥에서는 만족스럽게 해석될 순 없다. 이러한 상징주의적 작품은 장식과 더불어 형이상학적 이데아를 구현하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 의미에서 그의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 <입맞춤>은 이데아의 구현을 향한 나르시스적 의지에 의해 창조된 작품이라 할 수 있다.;This thesis is a study of narcissism which is expended Europe and Vienna at the close of nineteenth century through Gustav Klimt(1852-1918)'s work. At the close of nineteenth century, this narcissism was reflected in woman. Because it was thought that woman only want sexuality as a man search the mental sublimation. So the male was taken n narcissism of a delusion of persecution that woman bring ruin upon him. Femme fatal which was a artificial woman was made by the artist narcissism. That Femme fatal image was appeared in Klimt's work. As the narcissism of a delusion of persecution make a sexual and threatening woman as the narcissism have a function to make a creative work. Klimt acted in Vienna secession believe in 'art for art's sake' and the save through the art. This idea was accorded with the pessimistic mood of society and the mood of longing for art. Klimt's canvas embodies not uncertainty reality but metaphysical idea and get toward to show this idea to general man. His portrait can be interpreted the embodiment of the metaphysical idea He created the idealized image excluded reality of a person's character. Klimt's iconography was not interpreted perfectly if only depending on realistic context. With the ornament, this symbolism picture embody metaphysical idea In this context <The Kiss>, his masterpiece, was created by narcissism to achieve the accomplishment of art.
