Abstract

Marcel Dupre´ (1886-1971) was an influential composer who was active from late 19th until early 20th century. The purpose of this study was to analyze his organ work "Symphonie Passion Op. 23" in order to review the characteristics of his organ works and have a better understanding of his contemporary organ music. Marcel Dupre who represented the French organ music during the early 20th century produced numerous works. He was not only a composer but also a performer, conductor and educator, achieving much for the contemporary music. From the late 19th until the early 20th century, the French music would witness some outstanding trends. They were program music trend of religious or mundane contents. There was another trend with a strong color tone or the Impressionism tendency. In addition, there could be found a new 20th-century music tendency departing from the conventional tonality-centered music. And we can see a tendency borrowing from the melodies of Gregorian chants or based on them, which is apparent in Dupre's works. One of the symphony style works produced by Dupre, or "Symphonie Passion" shows the outstanding features shown in the French music from late 19th until early 20th century. This piece consists of 4 chapters in total, each of which has its own theme. The theme of the first chapter is "People waiting for a savor", that of the second chapter "A Savor born", and that of the third chapter "Passion of the Cross". The theme of the last chapter is 'Christ's resurrection'. The first chapter shows departure from the conventional tonality, uses of double beats and progression of the discords, all of which hint a new tendency of composition in the 20th century. The second chapter features the tonality apparently, but it's tonality varies frequently, while it is contrasted with the first chapter, progressing centered about melodies. The third chapter is slowest among all, using unique rhythm types frequently. Its contents are being delivered through some sound forms, which are much characteristic of the program music. The last fourth chapter repeats the characteristics of its preceding chapters, concluding them to feature Dupre's unique personality most.;본 논문은 19세기 말부터 20세기 초의 프랑스 음악에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 작곡가 듀프레(Marcel Dupre´, 1886-1971)와, 그의 오르간 작품「패션 심포니」(Symphonie Passion Op.23)의 분석을 통해 듀프레의 오르간 작품의 특징을 고찰하고 당시 오르간 음악의 흐름과 내용을 이해하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 20세기 초 대표적인 프랑스 작곡가중의 한사람으로 프랑스 오르간음악에 있어 빼놓을 수 없는 작곡가인 듀프레는 그의 전 생애를 통해 많은 작품을 남겼으며 작곡가뿐만 아니라 연주자이자 지휘자, 교육자로서 많은 업적을 남겼다. 19세기 말에서 20세기 초 프랑스 음악에서는 두드러진 특징을 살펴볼 수 있는데 그 첫 번째가 종교적이거나 세속적인 내용의 표제음악적인 경향이다. 또한 강한 색채를 띠는 양상이나 혹은 인상주의적인 경향을 볼 수 있고, 특히 이전의 조성중심의 음악에서 탈피하고 새로워진 20세기의 작곡경향도 찾아볼 수 있다. 그레고리안 성가의 선율을 차용하거나 기초로 하여 작품을 쓰는 경향도 있는데 이러한 특징들은 듀프레의 작품을 통해 많이 발견된다. 듀프레가 남긴 심포니 스타일의 작품 중 하나인「패션 심포니」에서도 역시 19세기 말에서 20세기 초의 프랑스 음악에서 나타나는 두드러진 특징을 살펴볼 수 있다. 이 곡은 모두 4악장으로 구성되어 있으며 그리스도의 생애라는 주제아래 각각의 악장마다 제목을 갖는다. 그리스도의 생애를 1악장에서는 ‘구세주를 기다리는 사람들’, 2악장에서는 ‘구세주의 탄생’, 3악장에서는 ‘십자가의 고난’, 마지막 4악장에서는 ‘그리스도의 부활’로 나누고 이를 상징적으로 표현한다. 1악장에서는 조성에서의 탈피와 복박자의 사용, 불협화음의 진행을 통해 20세기의 새로워진 작곡경향을 많이 찾아볼 수 있다. 2악장은 조성이 뚜렷이 존재하지만 자주 변화하며 1악장과 대비되는 구조를 지니고 선율중심으로 진행되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 3악장은 전 곡중 가장 느린 악장으로 특징적인 리듬 형을 자주 사용하고 그 음형을 통해 곡의 내용을 전달 하는 표제음악적인 경향을 가장 많이 지닌 악장이다. 마지막 4악장은 각 악장에서 나타났던 특징들이 한 번씩 반복되면서 단일화를 이룬다. 이와 같이 듀프레는 시대적인 특징 속에 자신의 개성과 종교적인 신념이 담긴 곡들을 작곡했으며 특히「패션 심포니」는 신고전주의, 표제음악, 심포니 스타일, 그레고리안 멜로디의 차용 등의 시대적인 요소를 고루 갖춘 대표적인 작품으로 프랑스 오르간 음악계의 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다.
