Abstract
American composers in the 19th century were strongly affected by European tradition. Especially, the German romantic tradition of instrumental music was prevailing. However, as the status of America in social, political and economical aspects had radically risen since World War I (1914 - 1918), its importance in cultural fields, including music, was also elevated. Accordingly, the combination of the fast - disappearing romantic tradition and modern expressionistic skills, and the will to find American things built the music environment of America in the early 20th century. Under circumstances like this, piano music composers are divided into two groups. One is Neo - classical composers who revived the old music style of the renaissance of the Baroque, and the other is nationalistic composers who attempted to use folk rhythms and melodies, along with the acceptance of other traditional techniques. Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990) was a front - running composer who led this new field of American music. He showed various music styles from jazz, folk elements and neo - classicism to serial music which evolved after the World War Ⅱ. However, the most important thing for him was being 'American' and his efforts to incorporate American expression were continued through his entire life. The Piano Sonata examined in this thesis is one of his efforts to use jazz rhythm in the frame of neo - classicism, and express American usage with various rhythmic changes.;19세기 미국의 작곡가들은 유럽의 전통을 강하게 이어받았다.
