Abstract
Reflections on the Revolution in France(1790)에 대항하여 쓴 Blake의 The French Revolution(1791)은 내용에 있어서는 Burke의 정치적 보수성을 비판한 것이었지만 이를 담고 있는 시라는 예술형태는 바로 Burke의 숭고성 이론을 비판하는 의도를 지닌 것이었다. 이는 The Book of Urizen(1794)과 The Book of Los(1795)를 통해 제시되는데, Blake는 이 시속에서 Los로 하여금 Burke를 형상화한 인물인 Urizen의 오류를 체험하고 자신의 노력을 통해 진리를 깨닫게 함으로서 The French Revolution에서보다 한층 높은 수준의 수고성을 지향한다. This thesis attempts to explore the interdependent progress between the sublime form and political content in The French Revolution and Lambeth Poems. The sublimity has been generally discussed from the aesthetic viewpoint since Longinus' Peri Houpsus, so The French Revolution and Lambeth Poems, which deal with political events, have been estimated the least sublime poetry. However when we see that Blake's mythological figures, Urizen, Orc, Los, who are made up of his so called 'most sublime' poetry, had been created and shaped out of the political atmosphere in The French Revolution and Lambeth Poems, we can point out that the formation of sublime poetry is closely related with Blake's political viewpoint. In addition, this relation can be shown in the fact that the process to the later poetry is under way to criticize Burke's political and aesthetic theory. This thesis concentrates on the sublime form in The French Revolution and Lambeth Poems which represent the political and aesthetic understaning of Burke. The first part of the main body examines the textual meaning of the Bible and Milton, Ossian Poetry which build up the form of Blake's sublime poetry from the historical background of the sublime. The Bible and Milton had been considered as the well known representatives of great writing including great ideas before the eighteenth century. However in the angle of the eighteenth century aesthetics, the two were thought to be the best textbooks that had an abundant supply of sublime experiences like terror, astonishment, which were systematized by Burke. In the Burkean sublime religious transcendentalism was never pursued, so the Ossian Poems, the literature of Northern revival, were regarded as the sublime equivalence. When it came to the end of the century, the aesthetic theories of Burke were criticised by the people who wanted to search for the spiritual ideas of the sublime. In addition, his conservative political theory was attacked by the reformers including Blake. The French Revolution and Lambeth Poems reflected Blake's political and aesthetic criticism toward Burke at this time. The second part examines how Blake criticizes Burke's political and aesthetic views through the sublime form in The French Revolution. Blake uses the epic form of Milton and Ossian known as Burke's sublime at that time in order to indicate the aesthetic principle on which Burke's political pamphlet was based. In order to criticize Burke, Blake uses Burke's obscurity and dark images in describing the ancien re´gime who were spiritually supported by Burke. In addition, with the intention of supporting the reformers who were severely condemned by Burke, Blake uses the his distinct, sunbeam image. The third part explores Blake's another reflection on Burke's stronger influence on the conservative ancien re´gime. Throughout the Lambeth Poems, Blake criticizes Burke straightforwardly and searches for the salvation by means of art. Disappointment in the anti-revolutionary action of Fayette makes Blake search for the perfect spiritual symbol such as Jesus in the Bible instead of the humanistic hero Fingal. This tendency to go back to the religious sublime does not imply Blake's escape from realities, but his efforts to restore lost history of the sublime caused by Burke.
