Keats의 로맨스 構造 硏究

Abstract

Keats's romance were attacked as "vulgar and political poetry" by his contemporary major reviewers. In 19th century, however, they were regarded as the poetry showing the real truth of beauty by aesthetic critics. Especially, Isubellu rind the Eve of St. Agnes were among the poems they appreciated most. By many 20th century distinguished scholars, they have been understood as aesthetic, and metaphysical poetry. But those criticisms on the whole overlooked the historical character of Keats, and described him as an aesthete who has no concern for the reality. Recent researches, however, are trying to recover the historical character of Keats. This study analyzes Keats's romance in this respect. While writing Isubellu, Keats wrote in his letter that he was now writing a "new Romance" which was distinguished from 'old romance'. Keats's experiment with rommance was completed in The Eve of St. Agnes. Therefore, it can be said that Keats's romances were developed through his literary experiment stirling from Isubella and ending with The Eve of St. Agnes. The characteristics of this 'new Romance' are: first, the descriptions are greatly influenced by Gothicism which was in great fashion in his days. Second, the main characters in his romnnces parody those of the conventional 'old romances' such as medieval romance and pastoral romance. Finally, the plots of the romances contain political attacks on the established social norms. Therefore Keats used this new Romance its a medium of resistance against the bourgeois from the perspective of new social class - the petty bourgeois. In this paper, I analyze the beginning of new Romance - Isabella and it's completion - The Eve of SL Agnes focused on descriptions, characters, and plot with a view to illuminating the politics of Keats's aestheticism. In Chapter Ⅱ, I survey the meaning of Romance briefly, specifying the characteristics of Keats's "new Romance". In chapters Ⅲ, and Ⅳ, I analyze Isabella and The Eve of St. Agnes in detail. The point of this research is to broaden the understanding of Keats by rediscovering the historical aspects of Keats's poetry.;동시대인들에게는 정치적인 시라고 비판을 받았던 Endymian을 비롯하여 Isabella와 The Eve of St. Agne와 같은 Keats의 로맨스는 19세기 유미주의 비평가와 20세기 주류 비평가들에 의해서, 심미적, 형이상학적인 시로 이해되었다. 본 논문은 Keats의 심미주의 이면에 숨어있는 정치적 성격을 그가 썼던 일련의 로맨스를 분석하면서 밝혀보고자 한다. Isabella를 쓰면서, Keats는 '옛 로맨스 old romance'와 대비되는 '신 로맨스 new Romance'를 쓰고 있다고 말하였다. 이러한 노력은 The Eve of St. Agnes에서 완성되고 있다. 이처럼 Keats의 로맨스는 Endymion에서 Isabella를 거쳐 The Eve of St. Agnes로 발달을 하고 있다. 이 '신 로맨스'의 특징은 첫째, 묘사에 있어서는 당시에 유행하기 시작하던 고딕 로맨스의 형식을 취하고, 있다는 것이다. 둘째, 주인공의 모습은 '옛 로맨스 old romance' 인 중세 로맨스(medieval romance)나 목가적 로맨스(pastoral romance)를 풍자하고 있다는 것이다. 그러나, 이러한 풍자는 반로맨스(anti- romance)성격을 띤 것이 아니라, 새로운 로맨스를 구축하기 위한 것이다. 마지막으로, 로맨스의 줄거리는 비록 명시적으로 표현되지 않는다 하더라도, 기존 체제와 사회에 대한 정치적인 공격성을 가지고 있다는 것이다. Keats는 이러한 신 로맨스를 궁극적으로, 당시 사회와 문학을 지배하고 있던 거대 부르주아에 대한 신흥 소부르주아(petty bourgeois)의 저항의 매체로서 사용하였다. 본 논문에서는 신 로맨스의 시작인 Isabella와 완성이라고 할 수 있는 The Eve of St. Agnes를 묘사, 인물, 이야기를 중심으로 그 안에 들어있는 정치성에 대해 분석함으로써, Keats가 가진 역사성을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 본문 첫 장에서는 로맨스 장르의 개략적 의미와 Keats의 로맨스에 대해 알아보고, 둘째 장과 셋에 장에서는 각각Isabella와 The Eve of St. Agnes를 이러한 관점에서 분석한다.
