Abstract

Benjamin Edward Britten(1913-1976), an English composer of 20th century, was produced many kinds of works based on variety which is trend of 20th century. A range of his compositions includes various forms such as vocal music, orchestral music, choral music, ballet music, and even incidental music for films and dramas; however, most of his main works are in vocal music, especially song cycles. His music is founded on a classical trend which is influenced by Henry Purcell(1659-1695) with other modern elements. This thesis aims to study his vocal music, especially song cycle, and it is constructed with general information of Britten's song cycle and analysis of 「On this Island」. The conclusions are as follows: All songs with poems of Auden are parted by text, tonality, or accompaniment, one part is partitioned into two or three small sections. In the whole vocal melody is composed serial, stepwise pattern with 3rd intervals, chromatic, and recitativo. Each song has short introduction and postlude by piano, and piano accompaniment mostly imitating progression and prescience between the vocal and piano part. The tonality on major-minor basis; however it also make dissonance sounds with bitonality, added tones, and parallel progression of 3rd chords. All of them excepts the 1st, they have a single meter and simple rhythm.;브리튼(Benjamin Edward Britten, 1913-1976)은 20세기 전반에 활동한 영국의 작곡가로서 20세기의 전반적인 경향이었던 다양성에 기반하여 다양한 장르의 음악을 남긴 인물이다. 그의 작품은 성악곡, 관현악곡, 극음악, 합창음악, 발레음악, 그리고 실용음악 등 거의 대부분의 음악 장르에 널리 분포되어 있는데 특히 연가곡을 비롯한 성악곡에 있어서 뛰어난 창작 활동을 펼쳤다. 그의 음악은 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695)의 영향을 받은 보수적인 경향을 토대로 하며 그 위에 여러 20세기 적인 요소를 가미하여 이루어졌다. 본 논문은 브리튼이 특히 중점적으로 작곡하였던 성악 음악, 그 중에서도 연가곡을 중심으로 연구한 것으로 분석에 앞서 브리튼의 연가곡에 나타난 전반적인 특징과 실제 악곡인 「On This Island」를 분석하는 내용으로 이루어져 있으며 그 결과 다음과 같은 특징으로 요약된다. 오든의 시를 가사로 하는 이 연가곡의 형식은 가사, 조성 또는 반주부에 의해 구분되고 각 부분은 성악부 선율의 진행에 의해 다시 2, 3개의 부분으로 구분된다. 성악부 선율에서는 순차, 도약 진행이 골고루 분포되어 있으며 3화음의 화음선, 반음계, 낭송과 같은 선율선이 사용된다. 각 개별 악곡은 1-3마디의 짧은 전주와 후주부를 가지며 피아노부는 일관성 있는 동기 또는 성악부를 모방하며 진행된다. 조성은 장, 단조 체계를 가지며 복조성, 부가음, 3화음의 병진행 등을 사용하여 불협화 음향을 형성한다. 제 1 곡을 제외하면 모두 하나의 박자로 일관되고 있으며 리듬도 단순하게 사용되어 있다.
