Abstract
This thesis presents a study of Vladimir Tatlin's concept 'Culture of Materials' and his materialistic approach to the relation between technology and art. As the reader of Russian Constructivism, Tatlin made various works in the revolutionary period. Especially his cardinal works were based on the materialistic concept. In his trying to use the technology in his works, thinking it as the main way for accomplishing Utopia, his materialistic attitude is prominent. With the coming of 20th century, modern technology influenced many parts of life. During the various discussions about the relation between technology and art continued, artists also began to have interests in the technology which placed as the new era's characteristic. Especially in Russia, technology was introduced at the same time with the Revolution, and it was considered as the practical means for approaching to Utopia. Russian avant-gardes fully expressed the expectation and the belief of technology in their works in this context. Tatlin is the most remarkable among Russian avant-gardes in the aspect that he accepted technology very boldly. He used the technology directly in his works thinking it as a physical and practical thing. His materialistic view about the world we can discover in his 'Culture of Materials' took very important role in this thought. 'Culture of Materials' is to respect the nature of materials and make works not changing the original nature. It was the basis of all his works. His philosophy like this made him understand technology not in the spiritual sphere but in the practical one. His unique approaching method to technology was expressed variously in his counter-reliefs and the utilitarian works after the Revolution. The counter-reliefs before the Revolution, completely based on 'Culture of Materials', show his attitude understanding technology as a physical one. The sturctural principle of counter-reliefs resulted from reflecting his concern about materials, responsing the nature of materials and going towards the construction. In addition, it is noteworthy that the industrial materials like irons, glasses were already used in the counter -reliefs. Revolution of 1917 was a turning point for Tatlin. He began to make works strongly connected with the utility and borrow the technology in his works. His works using technology was largely welcomed by people who considered technology as the important method for achievement of Utopia. The most famous work is . Using the spiral like tower of Babel, he expressed the dynamism of socialist revolution. He expressed the advancing society through the appearance like an apparatus and the use of modern materials like iron, steel, glass. He tried to construct the most revolutionary construction using technology and the four rooms in the tower were to revolve in various terms. The flying apparatus is another work he used technology. Tatlin investigated the bird's flying motion and pose and made the flying machine after 3 years of study. It was invented to fly only with men's muscular power like birds. He understood the bird's motion as a mechanical one. The industrial materials like duralumin, ball bearing were also used for making the flying machine. Tatlin hoped to use in the daily life just like a bicycle. This expectation shows his thought considering technology as the practical method. Technology was also used in the theater. is a good representative. Khlebnikov, a close friend of Tatlin, was the poet who did construction with words. is his last poem and Tatlin staged it. He prepared with performance, lecture and exhibition of counter-reliefs because was so difficult poem to understand. The set looked 1ike a colletion of counter-reliefs because he exhibited counter-reliefs as the corresponding material construction with the words construction of Khlebnikov. Technology played an important role here, for example, machine was used for moving the sets, and the projector was placed to show the nature of conter-reliefs and to take the audiences' attention. Tatlin tried to express his own response to the modern technology as well as the revolutionary thought of the period. His work which used modern materials of industrial society had a technological function and also harmonized with the symbolical vision. He considered Utopia as the realizable thing in the physical sphere and tried to make it true through his works in the real space.
