바젠느 회화에 나타난 “꼬뮤니옹(communion)” 정신

Abstract

본 논문은 바젠느가 자신의 추상미술에 대한 독특한 관점으로서 제시한 '꼬뮤니옹(communion)' 개념에 관한 연구이다. 바젠느는 회화뿐 아니라 여러 공공작업에서까지 추상성이라는 현대적인 조형성을 탐구하고 이론적 배경까지 기술한 화가이다. 그는 추상회화를 현실과 밀접하게 연계된 양식으로 제기하고 그것의 구체적인 실현을 보여주는 바, 본 논문은 이러한 추상성의 근저가 되는 '꼬뮤니옹' 정신의 의미와 특질 그리고 작품 내의 구현 양상에 대한 고찰을 그 내용으로 한다. 바젠느는 구상에서 추상으로 변모하는 1940-1950년대 프랑스 추상회화 운동에 중추 역할을 한 인물이다. 그의 '꼬뮤니옹' 정신은 외부세계와 화해·융화할 것을 주장하는 개념으로, 객관적 분석에만 치우친 당시의 서구 추상미술에 대한 하나의 예술 정신으로서의 보완책이다. '꼬뮤니옹' 개념의 정립에는 세잔느, 보나르의 회화론 그리고 베르그송, 프루스트의 관점이 절대적인 영향을 끼친다. 이리한 이론들을 취하여 수렴된 '꼬뮤니옹' 정신의 특질은 한마디로 자아와 현실, 작가와 화면, 과거와 현재, 주관과 객관과의 결합을 지향하는 통합성이다. 이것은 모든 것이 결합되어 서로 상호침투하게 될 원초적 순수성의 세계를 갈망하는 바젠느의 욕구에서 비롯된다. 따라서 '꼬뮤니옹' 정신이 투사된 바젠느의 회화는 구현, 변모, 포용의 특성을 드러낸다. 바젠느의 작품을 분석해보면 우선 주제적으로는 유년, 잠수, 나무에서 기본요소, 탄생, 여명으로 변모한다. 그리고 양식적 측면에서는 재현 대상의 변형과 기하학적인 구성을 거쳐 유동적 구성으로 발전한다. 주제와 양식이 긴밀히 연관되어 통합세계에 대한 작가의 확신감을 드러내 보여주는 것이다. 그리고 최종적으로는 그리는 행위의 교차를 빨강색과 하얀색을 통해 강조하는 양상으로 발전 해가면서 "꼬뮤니옹' 예술론의 통합 정신을 극대화한다. 즉 바젠느가 생각하는 순수 체험의 세계를 심화시켜 보여주는데 결정적으로 작용한 주요소는 하얀색, 빨강색 그리고 교차하는 작가의 그리는 행위이다. 종합해 볼 때 '꼬뮤니옹' 개념에는 외부대상과의 정서적인 동일시를 강조한 낭만주의적인 분위기가 짙게 배어있다고도 할 수 있다. 그러나 바젠느는 그리는 행위를 통해 작업을 전개시키는 등 실존주의를 흡수한 추상회화의 특성을 독특하게 반영한다. 바젠느는 낭만주의적 개념을 극복하고 시대 상황을 반영한 예술론을 주장한 것이다. 즉 감정이입의 논리 위에 당대의 사상을 취하고 수렴하여 '꼬뮤니옹' 개념을 이끌어 낸 것으로 볼 수 있다. 결론적으로 현실에 대한 관심과 애착을 완전히 상실한 추상회화에 대한 저항에서 출발하여, 있는 그대로의 현실을 수용하고 그것에 직접 참여할 때 얻어지는 시각을 통해, 현실의 실체를 드러낸 작업이 바로 바젠느의 '꼬뮤니옹'의 예술이 된다. 본 논문에서 고찰한 '꼬뮤니옹' 개념을 통해 바젠느의 추상성은 현실과 인간과의 화해 등을 의도하고자 표명된 양식이라는 결론을 내릴 수 있었다. 이 점에서 본 연구는 추상회화의 역사 속에서 바젠느가 차지하는 독자적인 위치를 알려줄 뿐 아니라 추상회화를 이념적 형식미의 탐구로서 간주하던 기존의 틀에 새로운 인식의 가능성을 열어줄 계기가 되리라 생각한다.;This thesis is based on a study of the concept of communion presented by Jean Bazaine in his abstract art. J. Bazaine is an artist who has been searched for the form of abstraction and has made a theoritical study of it from his canvas to public works. He suggested an intimate connection between the abstract art and the realities of life. Further to this, he shows a concrete aspects of this connection. Therefore, this is to be an in-depth study of the meaning, specific character and realization of the concept of communion based on Bazaine's abstract art. Bazaine plays an important role in the movement of abstract art which was changing from representative art to abstract art during the period 1940-1950. His perspective, known as the "concept of communion", is that we must be reconciled with realities of life. It is an alternative spiritual conception to that of western abstract art which attaches more importance to objectical analysis. The concept of communion is founded especially on the art theories of Ce´zanne and Bonnard, the philosophy of Bergson and the literature of Proust. The specific character of the concept of communion on which these theories can be summed up as converging on, is unification following the perfect fusion between the self and the realities of life, artist and canvas, past and present, subject and object. This originates from a craving to discover the purity of the primordial world in which everything is so unified as to penetrate reciprocally. The projection of this concept enfolded in the works of Bazaine reveals three characteristics that are, incarnation, transfiguration and embracement. In analyzing the paintins of Bazaine, the main subjects change from infancy, submergence, tree to elementariness, nativity, dawn. Formally transformation and geometrical composition develop toward movable compositions; It is the close co-operation between subject and form that shows the firm belief af the author in the unified world. Finally through cross-action expressed in red and white, the characteristic of unification in Bazaine's art based on the concept of communion is matured. That is, principal elements showing the maximum of the pure experience pursued by Bazaine are white, red and the cross action of the author. Putting these facts together, the concept of communion seems to be related to the empathy of romanticism in which, emotional identification is embossed. But above all Bazaine develops the works through his action. It is an actual example that Bazaine put existentialism into practice in his abstract works. Bazaine conquers the concept of romanticism and furthermore he insists on art theory being a miror of his times. That is, after he has accepted the concept of empathy, he draws the concept of communion which reflects the main theoris of his times. In conclusion, he firstiy resists abstract art deprived of affection for realities of life; secondly he insists on embracing it and seeks the vision obtained with himself participating in it. Therefore, it could be said that his works based on the concept of communion show the substance of the realities of life. After this study, the conclusion could be reached that Bazaine's abstraction is the form standing for the reconciliation between the human body and realities of life. Just at this point, we can estimate Bazaine's own position in the history of abstract art. And for the understanding abstract art, we also get a new alternative to conventional recognition in which abstract art is regarded as the pursuit of the beauty of form.
