Charles E.Ives의 Symphony NO.4에 대한 분석 연구

Abstract

19C말까지 음악적으로 유럽의 영향하에 있었던 미국은 20C에 들어서면서 새로운 사상을 토대로 미국적이고 진취적인 음악을 만들기 위한 노력이 일기 시작하였다. 이런 흐름 가운데 선구적 역할을 하게 된 작곡가가 바로 Charles Ives라 할 수 있다. 어려서부터 비전통적인 작곡기법에 관심을 가졌던 Ives는 청교도 사상에 입각한 초월주의를 바탕으로 작곡활동을 하였는데 그의 작품 대부분은 종교적, 철학적 사상을 담고 있다. 그는 전통적인 양식을 붕괴시키면서 새롭고 독창적인 음악세계를 보여주고 있는데 그가 미국 현대음악의 길을 열어 주었다는 사실은 그의 대표작이라 여겨지는 Symphony No. 4 (1910~16)에 나타나 있다. 본 논문에서는 이 Symphony No. 4에 나타난 음악 어법을 형식, 선율, 조성과 화성, 박자·템포와 리듬, 악기 편성, dynamics로 나누어 고찰해 보았다. 이 곡은 모두 4악장으로 되어 있는데 1악장은 웅장한 Prelude, 2악장은 대조가 극심한 Comedy, 3악장은 단순한 Fugue, 4악장은 느리고 장엄한 Finale이다. 전체적으로는 무조의 음악속에 널리 알려진 선율을 인용하면서 조성의 음악을 도입하고 있으며, 화성적으로는 복화음이나 음군 등 현대적 기법을 시도하고 있다. 특히 이 작품에 사용된 불규칙적이고 복잡한 박자와 독립적인 리듬은 현대음악의 중요한 요소로써 그의 진보성과 대담성을 보여주고 있다. 악기는 다양한 방법으로 편성되며 서로 다른 템포와 dynamics을 갖는 group들은 2~3명의 지휘자를 필요로 하기도 한다. Ives의 음악은 서로 다른 리듬, 박자, 조성을 갖는 많은 소리들이 결합되어 하나의 음악으로 재생된다. 또한 그의 음악에 나타나는 이원적 양상, 즉 본질(substance)과 방법(manner)에 따르는 전통과 비전통, 단순함과 복잡함, 통일성과 변화성은 그가 개방적인 태도로 모든 음악어법을 자신의 독특한 어법내에 수용하고 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 이런 관점으로 볼때 Charles Ives는 당시의 작곡가들보다 앞서 20C 음악을 예견하였으며, 현대적 기법의 선구적 사용으로 후대의 많은 작곡가들에게 큰 영향을 미치고 있다.;The United States of America that had been by the late nineteenth century under the European influence in music, began in the early twentieth century to exert an effort for creating on American style of and progressive, music on the basis of a new musical idealism. One of those who played a pioneer role under the circumstances was Charles Ives. Keenly interested in non-traditional composition techniques while still a little boy, Charles Ives conducted musical composition on the basis of Puritanism-grounded transcendentalism. The fact that he opened a way to American contemporary music is clearly expounded by what is called his best composition, i.e., his Symphony No.4 (1910-16). He collapses in it the traditional style of music, instead quotes American traditional melodies, expressing both dissonant atonality all over and tonality partially. Modern techniques Ives used harmonically include polychords, tone clusters, quarter-tones, and so forth. Particularly irregular beats and rhythms serve as valuable factors in contemporary music, showing Ives' progressiveness and intrepidity. The dualistic aspects depicted in Ives' music, i.e., tradition and non-tradition. by substance and manner, complexity and simplicity, changeability and unity, disclose that he accepts into his unique musical language all musical languages with an open attitude. When seen from this point of view, it seems that Charles Lves predicted the twentieth century music in advance ahead of his contemporary composers, and that his modern techniques have had a great influence upon his descendant composers.
