O. Messiaen의 음악어법에 관한 연구

Abstract

Olivier Messiaen (1908.12.-1992.4.)은 카톨릭 신앙을 바탕으로 독자적인 음악 어법을 통해 자신만의 음악세계를 추구한 작곡가이자, 이론가, 교육자로서, 그 개인적인 성향에도 불구하고 20세기 음악사에서 주요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 본 논문은 Messiaen의 특징적인 음악 어법을 고찰하고, 「Pre′ludes pour Piano」를 통해 그 구체적인 실례를 확인하여 Messiaen 의 음악 세계를 이해하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. Messiaen 음악의 사상적 배경은 카톨릭 신앙과 Tristan 과 Isolde 신화로 상징되는 인간애, 자연에 대한 사랑이며, 이것은 종교적인 신성한 사랑 (divine love)으로 요약될 수 있다. 또한, Messiaen은 첨가가치(added values), 역행 불가능한 리듬(nonretrogradable rhythm), 조옮김이 제한된 선법(modes of limited transposition)등의 개인적 어법과 함께 새소리, 그리스 리듬과 힌두 리듬등의 이국적 요소를 도입하여 색채를 표현하고자 했다. 본 논문에서 다룬 「Pre′ludes pour Piano」에는 이러한 Messiaen의 음악적 특징이 잘 나타나고 있다. 조성감을 갖고 쓰여진 이 곡에서는 형식에 대한 구조적인 연구가 이루어지고 있으며, Grieg와 Debussy의 음악이 재현 되고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 보면 「Pre′ludes pour Piano」는 과거의 어법들과 연관성을 갖고 있다고 할 수 있다. 반면, 이 곡에서는 Messiaen의 개인적인 음악어법, 즉, 역행 불가능한 리듬, 첨가가치 기법등이 사용되고 있어, 그가 전통적인 음악어법에 대하여 문제를 제기하고 있다는 사실을 발견할 수 있다. 또한 조성 음악에서의 탈피를 시도하고 있는데, 방법론에 있어서는 12음기법이 주류를 형성하던 이 시기의 전반적인 경향을 따르고 있지는 않다. 12음기법처럼 조성음악과 완전히 다른 '혁신적'인 시도를 한다기보다는 조성 음악내에서 독창적인 화성 어법을 창조한 것이다. 즉, 부가음 원리에 의해 만들어진 증4도와 장6도 음이 부가된 장3화음과 조성내에서 조옮김이 제한된 선법의 사용을 일반화하는 방법을 통해 곡에 색채 개념을 부여하고 있다. 그 외에도 Pedal group, 장식음그룹(The Embellishment group), Canon이 특징적으로 쓰였으며, 이에 더하여 3성부가 자주 사용되고, 건반의 음역이 최대한으로 활용되었다. 또한, 두 손을 교차시키는 반진행과 타악기적 효과를 사용하는등 새로운 피아노 데크닉이 시도되고 있다.;Olivier Messiaen (1908.12-1992.4) was a composer, theorist, and educator who created a unique world of his own through his original musical language based on the Catholic religion. In spite of his personal musical styles Messiaen holds an important position in the trends of twentieth century music. This thesis is intended to investigate the characteristic musical language styles of Messiaen by examining specific examples of Pre′lude pour Piano. It is presented with a purpose to understand the musical world of Messiaen The musical concept of Messiaen is based on the Catholic faith, the legend of Tristan and Isolde which represents human love, and the love of nature. These elements may be summarized as being representative of divine love. Messiaen tried to express the colors of music through his personal styles which utilize added values, nonretrogradable rhythm, and modes of limited transposition. To express the colors he also incorporated exotic elements such a s bird songs, Greek metres, and Hindu rhythm. Pre^(′)ludes pour Piano, wich is discussed in this thesis, clearly displays the musical characteristics of Messiaen. The work which is composed with tonal sense and shows a structural inquiry into the form of music, and the music of Greig and Debussy is being re-actualized. From the above-described aspects, the work can be said to show correlation musical languages of past times. However, it may also be seen that Messiaen is questioning the traditional styles of music by utilizing such characteristic rhythmic techniques as nonretrogradable rhythm and added values in his work. In addition, an attempt to break away from tonal music is being made by failing to follow the trends of the corresponding period which is most aptly represented by the use of the twelve-note technique. Instead of a ′revolutionary′ attempt completely different from tonal music, Messiaen created a distinctively personal harmonic language within its boundaries. That is, he succeeded in adding the concept of color into his music by applying the principal of added notes through the addition of the augmented 4th or 6th to the perfect triad, as well as by generalizing the use of modes of limited transposition within the tonality. In addition, the pedal group, the embellishment group, and the canon are charicteristically used in this work. Futhermore, 3 parts are often used and the utilization of the register of the piano is maximized. New piano techniques such as contrary motions through the hand cross, and percussion effects are also explored.
