Abstract
Alcoholism has bad influence not only on alcoholic himself, but on the member of his family, so the function of family will be changed. Thus we call it family disease. The wives of alcoholics will have psychological and emotional problems. Usually they don't have good relations with others. Characteristics of alcoholic's wives is called as codependency. Alcoholics' wives will be healthy intervening into the codependency then the function of family will be changed. It has been recognized that social support system like self-help group, Al-Anon is helpful to alcoholics' wives. However, social support and codependency is not practically examined yet. The purpose of this study was ; (1) to examine the levels of both codependency and perceived social support (2) to examine the relationship between codependency and social support (3) to determine whether there were differences of research subjects' codependency that was derived from demographic factor and alcoholics' drinking factor. (4) to examine what factors account for codependency. In order that, survey approach was used for data collection. 34 cases from inpatient alcoholics wives and 46 cases from Al-Anon groups. The total 81 research surveys were conducted for the final research analysis. Codependency Assessment Inventory (Friel, 1985) and social Support Scale (Park, 1985) modified to fit this group were utilized. The collected research information was processed by a SPSS/WIN PC statistic program, and the hypothesis was tested by frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson r and multiple regression. The main result of this study is summarized as follows ; 1. In demographic factors, the only variables was religion that made a statistically significant difference on the codependency of alcoholics' wives (t= , p<.05>. The individuals who have religion indicated lower level of codependency than those who have not religion. But sex, age, job, duration of marriage, degree of education and number of family members were not shown to make a significant difference in the level of codependency. 2. In alcoholics' drinking factors, the variable influencing their codependency was the duration of alcoholics' abstinence. There was a significant difference in mean scores between 1-3 years abstinence group and less 1 year group. 3. In social support factor, the variables significantly influencing their codependency were the self-help group members as a support provider and stability and similarity with self-help group member. First, the variable which had an impact on codependency was subjects' who have self-help group member as a support provider factors such as family, acquaintances and professionals as a support provider. Second, the number of support provider as variables did not significantly influence on codependency. Third, the frequencies with support provider values did not significantly influence on codependency. Fourth, the longer the duration of their relations among self-help group member, the lower the degree of codependeny. Fifth, the more feeling of similarity with self-help group member, the lower the degree of codependency. 4. In functional social support, significant correlations were found between informational social support and codependency (r=-.282, p=.0l0), evaluational social support and codependency (r=-.220, p=.047). 5. Using multiple regression analysis, stability and similarity with self-help group member significantly predicted overall codependency, F=2.685 p= .016 and accounted for approximately 22% (R^(2)=.217) of the variation on overall codependency. Thus longer duration of their relations among self-help group member and similarity with self-help group member. For conclusion, the research shows that social support variables affect the codependency of alcoholics' wives more than variables of demographic and alcoholics' drinking variables. Especially, self-help group was the most important independent variables in the decrease codependency.
