Abstract
Jazz is a typical 20th century music which formed one major stream amongst diverse tendencies, and it is the result of a gradual fusion of several musical cultures throughout many centuries. The first time this kind of music was acknowledged as jazz was during the early years of the 20th century. Beginning as a fused form of European musical modes and African rhythms and absorbing var ious new influences of music, it has continuously developed and been favoured by lots of people. Amongst various kinds of music of the 20th century, jazz has given a great deal of influence to every area of artistic musical composition, and its influence can be frequently seen in the works of major composers. Especially in the 1920s, jazz created a great sensation, and many works composed in this period reveal the influences of jazz. Among the works affected by jazz are "Golliwog's cake-walk (1909)" and Prelude No. 12 "Minstrels (1910)" by C. Debussy, "Concerto pour la main gauche (1931)" by M. Ravel, "Piano Rag-music (1919)" by I. Stravinsky, "Piano suite op. 26 (1922) by p. Hindemith, "First piano sonata (1902-1910)" and "Piano sonata No. 2 (1909-1915) by C. Ives, "Rhapsody in blue (1924)" by G. Gershwin, "Concerto for piano (1927)" by A. Copland and "Excursions (1944)" by S. Barber and so on. It is true, however, that many people still regard jazz as a popular music completely different from the classical one. Studies of the relationship between jazz and classical music have not fully developed while studies of jazz itself have been actively presented. The purpose of this study is to examine some works of piano music of the 20th century which reveal jazz characteristics and to investigate in what kind of form jazz was applied or transformed in the works of each composer. For this purpose, general musical trends rotated to the artistic music of the 20th century were looked at first, and next jazz elements were investigated throughout the emergence and the developmental process. Based on those jazz characteristics piano works containing jazz techniques were analysed as an example. Piano works of American composers by C. Ives, G. Gershwin, A. Copland, S. Barber have been analyzed as to their jazz elements in this dissertation.
