Mrs. H. H. A. Beach가곡의 문헌적 연구

Abstract

This thesis is a study on the songs of Mrs. H. H. A. Beach(1867∼ 1944), who played an important part in American music history. Beach was the first highly esteemed woman composer and pianist among the twentieth century American composers. Her works ranged over many genres such as mass, symphony, opera, oratorio, and chamber music. About 300 works have been published. Among these, songs are given much weight, in that they made her famous as a female composer. Generally, Beach's works are classified as neo-romanticism, for she sought after the romanticism of the nineteenth century, like the other contemporary composers, rather than after the innovative modernism of the twentieth century. She did not take an excessive stance but a moderate one, which shows abundant inspiration about the melody embroidered and rich with creativity. This study seeks to find general style characteristics of her approximately 120 songs though the analysis of six songs chosen from three style periods. The musical form, melody, tonality, harmony and rhythm are discussed in the stylistic analysis.;본 논문은 현대 미국 음악사에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 Mrs. H. H. A. Beach(1.867∼1944)의 가곡에 관한 연구이다. Beach는 19세기에서 20세기를 잇는 작곡가중 여성으로써 최초로 인정받은 작곡가인 동시에 피아니스트이다. 그녀는 미사, 교향곡, 오페라, 오라토리오, 실내악곡 등 다양한 장르에 걸쳐 작곡을 했으며, 약 300여개가 넘는 작품이 출판되었고 이 중에서 가곡이 가장 큰 비중을 차지하며 여성 작곡가로써 인정받을수 있도록 하였다. Beach는 일반적으로 신낭만주의(neo-romantic) 계열의 작곡가로 분류되는데, 이는 그녀의 가곡이 당시 미국 가곡 작곡가들이 그랬던 것처럼 20세기의 새로운 Modernism을 추구하기 보다는 19세기 낭만주의의 산물로써 전적으로 혁신적인 작곡 양식에 의거하지 않은 절충주의적 양식으로, 유려하고 창의성이 풍부한 선율에 대한 영감이 잘 나타나 있다. 본 논문은 Beach의 가곡을 전기, 중기, 말기로 나누어 음악의 형식, 선율, 조성 및 반주형태, 시의 번역을 통해 그녀의 가곡 양식을 알아보고자 한다.
