King Henry V 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 King Henry Ⅴ의 국가통합의 주제를 지배-피지배 계층의 갈등과 화합을 중심으로 다루고 있다. 작품이 쓰여진 엘리자베스조 말년은 내란과 외침이라는 군사적 위협뿐 아니라 사회 내부적으로 계층간의 분화가 심화되어 국가통합에 대한 욕구가 비등하던 불안의 시기였다. 이러한 상황을 시사적으로 반영한 King Henry Ⅴ는 전쟁이라는 위기의 상황에서 영광스러운 승리와 영토확장을 이룬 전쟁영웅 Henry Ⅴ를 그려냄으로서 초연 당시 열렬한 애국적 반응을 이끌어 내었다. 그러나 Shakespeare는 King Henry Ⅴ에서 강력한 군주를 중심으로 한 일방적인 국가통합의 비전이나 혹은 군주-평민간의 우애있는 결맹으로 승리를 거두었다는 미화된 국가통합을 부정하고 각 지배-피지배 계층간의 서로 다른 이해관계와 주장들이 갈등과 긴장을 일으키는 가운데 서로 개입하고 절충되어 타협을 이루는 화합을 제시하고 있다. 프랑스와의 전쟁이라는 대결 구도 하에서 Henry V는 귀족계급과 평민계급이 모두 동등한 형제들로서 일치된 이상적 국가통합체를 그의 통합의 비전으로 내세운다. 그러나 이상적 비전과는 달리 실제로는 지배 권력 중심으로 내부적 일치를 강화해가며 전쟁의 가치 규범을 선별하여 이에 맞지 않는 이들을 타자로서 구분지음으로써 사회악으로 소외시키는 제한된 통합체임을 드러낸다. 타자로서 소외되는 이들은 용맹스러운 애국적 전쟁에 맞지 않는 여성들과 Eastcheap무리들로서 이들은 중앙의 지배세력의 정치논리에 의해 하나의 주변적 존재들로서 축출되고 버림받으며 억압당한다. 그러나 이들은 꺽이지 않는 자신들의 자발적인 발언을 통해 일치와 통합을 주장하는 지배 논리의 허위성과 한계를 지적한다. 그리고 지배적 주장의 의미를 의심스럽고 모호하게 만드는 과정을 통해 중앙과 주변의 분리된 이야기라는 명확한 구별을 없애며 의미상 서로 개입되고 혼합되어 진다. 이러한 혼합은 5막의 결혼식에서 가장 두드러지게 나타난다. 전쟁의 승리자이자 지배자인 Henry Ⅴ는 프랑스 영토를 얻기 위해서는 패배국의 여성인 Katherine공주와 정략 결혼을 해야만 한다. Katherine은 소외되는 타자들 중 하나로서 패배와 여성이라는 금기시되어온 가치를 대변하고 있다. 그녀와의 결합은 소외되어 왔던 주변적 가치들이 결혼식을 통해 복귀되는 축제적 회복을 의미한다. 즉 King Henry Ⅴ의 극적 효과인 열광적인 호응과 만족은 단지 강력한 군주 중심의 국가통합에서 오는 국익의 극대화뿐만 아니라 타자로서 소외되었던 주변적 요소들도 함께 공존하며 화합을 이루어 가는데 있다고 하겠다.;In this thesis, I have studied the theme of national unity concerning with the conflicts and union between the ruling and the subordinate class in King Henry V. In the late Elizabethan period when Shakespeare wrote and presented his first King Henry V, not to speak of the threats of war from within and without, the deepening cracks between classes inside the society made the English people sorely demand a unified nation. In this period of agony, Shakespeare presented King Henry V which celebrated the victorious hero Henry V, who defeated and took over France successfully, and for this, the English responded with much enthusiasm and patriotic feeling. But, in this thesis, I have refused the notion that Shakespeare gave the vision of unified nation based on either the idealised kingship or the mystified relationship between king and subjects as friends. The unity Shakespeare presented is the union through intervention and negotiaton of conflicting and contradictory interests between the ruling and the subordinate class. Henry V takes advantage of the war against France for his idealistic notion of unified nation of 'brothers, friends, and countryman' irrespective of their social status. But inspite of his ideal, Henry V in practice is shown trying to intensify his ruling power and select and restrict the useful values for him at the expense of others who become isolated or deserted as outsiders in his society. The outsiders are the subordinates including the Eastcheap and women who are easy or effeminate and not suit for the fearless and dauntless spirit of war. They are all alienated or suppressed as marginal ones by the prevailing ideology of the ruling class. But they point out the limitations and falsity of unity asserted by the ruling class and question to obscure the ruling ideology with their unyielding voices. Through their subversive questioning, the marginal and the central assertions become mingled intervening each other. Such mingling of the two groups is seen remarkable in the 5th act. Henry V, the ruler and the victor of the war should marry Katherine, the princess of defeated France who represents the values of the effeminate woman and defeat, which Henry V rejected in his war. The marriage means the festive restoration of the margins and repressed values. So the effect of King Henry V, that is, the enthusiam and concord is not just from the state interest achieved by the powerful ruler, but the union with the central interests and those of the margins.
