Abstract
The purpose of this master's dissertation is to examine and analyze Frederic Chopin's Cello Sonata in g minor op.65 - one of three works performed during the writer's graduate recital - in the hope of a better understanding of this work's background, structure and form. Chopin was reknowned for piano works characteristic of the Romantic period. The Cello Sonata was composed in Chopin's later years and is unusual because it was specifically composed for the cello. Chopin's Cello Sonata Op.65 is unique because it breaks away from the traditional classical sonata form. In the first movement he omits the 2nd theme in the development, and the 1st theme in the recapitulation. The 2nd movement contains a Scherzo(ternary form - ABA' - 1 which usually does not appear until the 3rd movement in the classical sonatas. The 3rd movernent features a melody of irregular construction comprised of simple melodic fragments linked together. Finally in the 4th movement he again breaks away from the norm by using the ABA' B' A" and coda form. Although this work by Chopin does not adhere to the tradition classical sonata form, it nonetheless contains elegant lyrical melodic and harmonic progressions. In this way Chopin contributed greatly to the development of sonata form in the Romantic period.
