Shirley에 나타난 여성 문제

Abstract

This thesis estimates Charlotte Bronte's ambivalent attitude in Shirley with the feminist perspective by analyzing the friendship between Caroline and Shirley. According to Elaine Showalter, woman-culture is divided into two parts, one is male-dominant culture, and the other is the resisting part against it. The latter part shows unique characteristics of female world. Thus female writer's works should be understood as "double-voiced discourse" which include both dominant aspect and muted aspect. Shirley shows this ambivalent aspect of female literature. In Shirley the contradictions inherent in the position of Victorian women-the desire for freedom and self-realization vs the ideal of domesticity-are clearly expressed. The structure of Shirley has been criticised for its loose and fragmentary qualities, but this very looseness is both caused by and allows a more sustained and central exploration of female friendship for its own sake than is usual in the well-structured marriage-plot. While the female friendship has central structuring role, it is also different from all the other relationships in the book. It is portrayed as an island of peace and understanding, and it offers subversive feminist criticisms. Caroline is more aware of the social conditions that oppress women, while Shirley, being more independent in her social position, is more aware of the myths and stories that have no place for a strong woman. Because of its uniqueness, the friendship is separate from the male world of machinery and violence. The friendship is also presented as an isolated occurrence among other female relationships in the novel. Caroline and Shirley's friendship is defined by its peacefulness, its exclusion from male violence and excitement. Instead of allowing the friendship to develop a s a substitute for marriage, however, Bronte introduces the marriage plot and conventional ending. It is true that the trouble and excitement of male-female interaction are necessary to give the narrative shape and direction, because female friendship has been defined as "repose" which is away from novelistic action. But the narrative conventions that thus curtail the friendship are not just a matter of form, but the conventions embody what is considered socially acceptable: that marriage is the only acceptable and fulfilling destiny for a woman. Charlotte Bronte's use of ambivalence, a characteristic of female literature, allows her to voice her resistance against patriarchal Victorian society while to make it accepted in it.;본 논문은 Charlotte Bronte(1816-55)의 Shirley(1849)를 빅토리아 시대의 성이데올로기와 연결해서 분석해 봄으로써 이 작품의 진정한 가치를 평가해 보는데 그 목적이 있다. 특히 Caroline과 Shirley가 처하게 되는 현실적인 상황에 대한 분석에 초점이 맞추어진다. 이를 통해 Shirley에 존재하는 여러 가지 해결할 수 없는 모순점과 작가의 이중적이고 모호한 태도가 오히려 독자로 하여금 작음에서 제기되고 있는 여러 문제에 대해 새롭게 인식할 수 있게 해준다는 점을 강조하고자 한다. 서론에서는 Shirley를 여성 문제를 중심으로 해서 읽을 수 있는 여러 근거들에 대해서 살펴보고자 한다. Elaine Showalter는 여성의 문화에는 남성위주의 문화에 포함되어 있는 부분과 이에 저항하는 부분 두 가지 영역이 다 존재하고 있으며 남성 문화에 저항하여 이에 편입되지 않는 여성문학의 영역은 여성 특유의 생활양식과 무의식의 세계를 담고 있다고 설명한다. 이러한 여성 특유의 경험은 남성의 지배언어로는 표현될 수 없기 때문에 여성작가들은 남성의 영역에 편입되는 지배적인 이야기와 침묵된 이야기, 요컨대 두 가지 목소리를 한 작품 안에서 낼 수밖에 없다. Shirley역시 남성지배문화에 편입되는 영역과 이에 저항하는 영역이 공존하는 여성 문학의 특수성을 잘 드러내 주는 작품이다. Charlotte Bronte는 진보적인 가치를 지닌 Shirley를 통해 가부장제 하에서 고통받는 Caroline의 내면적인 욕구를 드러내고 있으며 이는 남성 중심의 지배 질서에서 벗어나고자 하는 여성들의 시도를 잘 보여주는 것이다. 이 작품은 빅토리아 조의 여성 문제를 구현한 작품이므로 당대의 여성에 대한 관점과 그들이 처한 현실에 대한 정확한 이해가 필요하다. 그러므로 본문의 첫 번째 부분에서는 영국 빅토리아 사회의 성 이데올로기와 여성 문제에 대해 살펴보고 가부장제로 인해 여성이 갇혀 있는 상황에 대한 논의가 이루어진다. 19세기 빅토리아 사회의 성이데올로는 "여성의 영역"에 관련된 이데올로기이고 당시 여성 작가들의 작품에는 이러한 성이데올로기에 대한 복종과 반항이 이루어진다. 산업화로 인한 가내 수공업의 축소는 가정과 노동의 분리를 심화시켰고 자연히 여성은 가정이라는 사적 영역을 남성은 공적 영역을 차지한다는 사적 영역과 공적 영역의 분리가 더욱 공고해졌다. 여성은 경제적인 활동으로부터 소외된 채 남성에게 봉사하는 역할을 요구받았으며 여성의 영역으로부터 벗어나지 못하도록 가두어졌다. 본문의 두 번째 부분에서는 Caroline과 주위 다른 여성들과의 관계에 대해서 살펴볼 것이다. Caroline은 Miss Ainley와 Miss Mann두 독신녀들, 그리고 어머니인 Mrs. Pryer와의 만남을 통해서 여성을 억압하는 사회를 비판적인 안목으로 바라보게 된다. Caroline과 Shirley의 우정이 발달되어가는 과정은 이 작품안에 당대의 사회적 문학적 관습에 호응하는 영역과 이에 저항하는 영역이 공존하고 있다는 것을 확연히 드러내준다. Caroline은 부당한 억압과 사회의 권위에 대한 분노를 처음에는 밖으로 표출하지 못하다가 점차 Shirley와의 우정에 영향을 받아 내면의 욕구나 분노를 직접 자신이 밖으로 표현할 수 있게 된다. Charlotte Bronte는 Shirley를 통해 여성의 고유 영역이라고 여겨진 가정에서 벗어나 자신의 독립을 찾으려고 하는 여주인공들로 하여금 빅토리아 사회의 억압하에서 여성들이 경험하게 되는 분노나 욕망을 표출하게 만들었고 또한 여성이 부지불식간에 사회가 여성에게 부과한 희생과 의무에 대한 가치를 내재화한 면과 이러한 여성관에 반항 하고자 하는 내면사이에서 갈등할 수 밖에 없는 상황을 정확히 표현했다는 점에서 중요한 여성작가로 논의될 수 있을 것이다.
