Paradise Lost에 나타난 Milton의 Eve 재고찰

Abstract

Milton의 Paradise Lost 는 성경의 창세기를 배경으로 하고 있다. 그는 그 곳의 주요 인물인 God과 Christ, 인간인 Adam과 Eve, 그리고 반역을 일으킨 Satan을 중심으로 이야기를 이끌어 나간다. 그래서 Paradise Lost는 읽는 이의 기준이나 관점에 따라 주인공이 달라 질 수 있는 열린 text이다. 그러나 형식상으로나 내용상으로나 이 작품에서 가장 중심이 되는 사건은 무엇보다도 Eve가 금지 되어 있는 Tree of knowledge 열매를 따먹은 행위라는 것을 부인할 사람은 아무도 없을 것이다. 이 행위에 우리의 관심이 집중되는 것은 신에 대한 불순종의 상징인 이 행위로 인하여 인간이 낙원에서 쫓겨난다는 점에 있다. 그런데 인간에게 낙원에서의 추방, 아니 그보다도 Tree of Knowledge 열매를 처음 먹는 인물은 다름 아닌 여성인 Eve이다. 따라서 자연적으로 많은 사람들의 Eve에 대한 인상은 인류 타락의 원인이며 악녀라는 것이 되었다. 게다가 Mi1ton이 Paradise Lost에서 묘사해 놓은 위계 질서에 따른 여성 Eve는 남성인 Adam과 동등하지 않고 그의 하위에 있는 것처럼 보인다. 바로 이런 점들로 인해 Mi1ton은 feminist 비평가들로부터 비난을 받아 왔다. 그러나 text 상에서 Adam과 Eve, God과 Christ, 그리고 Satan의 순종과 반역의 문제는, 그들이 단순히 아버지와 아들의 관계이기 때문이라거나, 남성과 여성의 관계이기 때문이라거나, 신과 신하의 관계이기 때문이라는 말로 쉽게 설명되지 않는다. 순종의 미덕은 Eve에게만 국한되는 것이 아니라, Satan에 비해 여성적으로까지 느껴지는 Christ에게서 완성된다. 또한 Eve가 뱀으로 변한 Satan에게 속아서 Tree of Knowledge 열매를 먹게 된 것과는 반대로 Adam은 Eve에게 속아서 그 열매를 먹은 것이 아니다. 그는 자기 스스로 Tree of Knowledge 열매 먹기를 선택했다. 온갖 정치적 역경과 실명이라는 여러 사건을 겪은 후 생의 의미를 터득한 Milton에게는 어느 한 性의 우열을 따지고 어느 쪽이 잘못을 했는가를 이야기하는 것이 중요한 것이 아니었다. Paradise Lost에서 Eve 는 전혀 열등하거나 혼자의 잘못으로 인류를 타락으로 이끈 그런 악녀가 아니다. 비록 인간은 신의 명령을 어기고 타락했지만, 결국은 신이 마련해 놓은 섭리 와 사랑을 깨닫고 인류의 구원에 대한 희망을 가지게 된다. 이 모든 사건의 중심에 있는 인물 Eve는 ,스스로 생각하고 행동하며 깨닫는다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 타락 후 진정한 화해와 용서를 사랑으로 이끌어 내며 간의 역사를 구원할 인류의 어머니로 나타나는 Eve의 모습을 새롭게 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다.;The background of Paradise Lost, written by John Milton, is Genesis in the Bible. Using the same main character - God and Christ, Adam and Eve, and a traitor, Satan, he made his story. Therefore, according to the point of view of the reader, Paradise Lost is open text which means that every main character in Paradise Lost can be a hero. But in the sense of style and story o f Paradise Lost the main event is, above all, Eve's eating the forbidden fruit, and that's no doubt. The reason why we think much of this event is that man was expelled from paradise for doing that which is the symbol of disobedience to God. By the way the first character who ate the forbidden fruit before being expelled is woman, Eve. Therefore people have come to regard Eve as a person who brought the Fall and death to mankind and is like Satan naturally. And the hierarchy of Milton's Paradise Lost seems that the woman Eve is in a subordinate position, not being equal to the man Adam. Because of these things feminist critics have criticized Milton. But the problem of submission and revolt of God and Christ, Adam and Eve, and Stan is not simple in the text. They don't submit or revolt because their relationship is father-son, man-woman, or God-angel. The virtue of submission is not only for Eve but also for Christ, who is feminine compared to Satan. It is accomplished through Christ. Eve came to eat the forbidden fruit by the deceiving of serpent Satan, on the contrary Adam wasn't deceived by Eve but chose to eat it by himself. It was not important for Milton. who realized the meaning of life after harsh political adversity and loss of eyesight, to tell which sex was inferior or superior, and wrong. Eve in Paradise Lost is not inferior and a witch who made the Fall alone at all. Though man disobeyed the order of God and fell, they realized the providence and God's love, and came to have the hope of Redemption. Eve, in the center of all events, thinks and acts, and realizes her true self. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is to correct the bias given to Eve who eventually made reconciliation and forgiveness through love after the Fall , and became the Mother of Mankind.
