Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to study the changes in the perception of reality and narrative form in Ch'ang Yong Hak's novels in the 1950s. Ch'ang Yong Hak is evaluated as the most prominent of the new generation of writers in Korea who wrote after the Korean War. The term new generation indicates the group of writers that perceived the hopelessness in the predicament of Korea and its people and attempted to create a new dimension in the literary attitude, and does not refer to the time division between the writers wriring before and after the Liberation. By analyzing the novels of Ch'ang Yong Hak in the 1950s, which show a shift in the point of view in narration as well as a change in the theme, it is possible to recognize the current trend among the post war writers, whose rebellion against the metaphysical and the subsequent discovery of new dimensions in literature were their quest in their contribution to the history of the novel. The form of narrative in a novel is not only concerned with the question of realizing the theme of the novel but becomes an artistic form in the way the artist understands the world. Therefore, analyzing the transition in narrative form in a novel is at the same time a means to explain the change in the perception of reality. In Chapter Ⅱ., the subject of discussion are the novels in which the construction of a narrative world by homodoegesis is discussed. The novels in question take the form of internal focalization, which see the fictional world from inside a character and is in the first person narrating his subjective inner world. In short by focusing the reader's attention on the inner reaction of the characters involved in the situation rather than on the outside actions of the actual situation the mental world of the character is directly narrated without the intermediary presence of the writer. In Chapter Ⅲ, the novels that are flexible in narrative distance are discussed. The co-existence of the third person and first person narrative enable the author to achieve variety in the character'c inner psychology and objective decription at the same time. It is notable as the criticism of the absurdity of reality and an attempt to overcome it is shown by this method. In Chapter Ⅳ analyzes the works that watch the object of narration from an objective distance as the narrator is fixed in one place. In particular, the Heterodiegesis adopts a stance of omnicient zerofocalization. The omnicience of the narrator is thus strengthened. However, the fact that the truth exiastant in actual reality was annuled in the system of a universal and complete metaphor by the omnicient voice of the narrator becomes a clue to explaining the fundamental limitaion of scope Ch'ang had as a post- Korean War author and his loss of creative energy after the 1960s. Therefore the transition from a first person narrative to omnicient is not only a shift in the narrative point of view bue also should be understood as an illustration of Ch'ang's formation of an ideological and abstract paradigm in the post-war reality . Ch'ang's attempt to do so proves that it is impossible to transcend the reality of the world by metaphor or to overcome reality by abstraction. Such an attempt is impossible because the redemption of tha human race can be achieved only by being rooted in life itself.
