Abstract

Aaron Copland(1900-1990) is a, representative composer of the 20th century in America. His Music is characterized by Serialism, Neo-classicism and jazz and folk idioms including functional music. There are 38 art songs amongest his works. These songs show the characteristics of contemporary music in America, while at the same time he has never lost his unique musical characteristics while composing various styles of music. This paper is a study of his only song cycle "Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson" by analyzing the text, form, tonality, harmony, rhythm and melody. The "Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson" are set to the poems of Emily Dickinson, a 19th century American poetress. These are based on the themes of nature, death, eternity, and heaven. Copland utilizes different musical characteristics according to the nature of the poems. Through this study the following musical characteristics of the song cycle are found. In it's structure, this song cycle is comprised of songs mainly showing a distinct form by transforming and progressing motives through imitative counterpoint, which shows Neo-classical influence. In melody, this song cycle follows strictly the natural poetic accent and intonation. Copland emphasises the color of harmony over it's function in this cycle. In rhythm, he shows some elements of American musical style through such things as syncopation and jazz.;Aaron Copland(1900-1990)는 20세기 미국의 대표적인 작곡가의 한 사람으로 그의 음악은 신고전주의적 경향과 재즈, 그리고 민속적인 요소를 포함하며, 대중적인 실용 음악과 12음열음악 등의 다양한 특징을 보이고 있다. 그의 작품 중 예술가곡은 모두 38곡이다. 이 곡들은 형식면에서 매우 다양함을 추구했으며, 그러면서도 Copland만의 독특한 음악적인 개성을 잃지 않았고, 미국 현대 음악의 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다. 본 논문은 그의 유일한 연가곡인 '에밀리 디킨슨의 12개의 시에 의한 가곡' -Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson- 을 연구분석한 것으로, 시의 내용 해석, 극의 형식과 조성, 화성, 리듬, 선율의 특징을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이 곡들은 미국의 여류 시인인 Emily Dickinson(1830-1886)의 시에 곡을 부친 작품으로 자연, 죽음, 영원, 천국 등을 그 주제로 삼고 있으며, 각 곡은 시의 내용에 따라 각기 다른 음악적 특징이 나타난다. 이 연가곡의 전체적인 특징을 살펴보면 곡의 형식면에 있어서는 대부분 뚜렷한 구조를 지니고 있으며, 모방 대위법적인 수법을 통하여 동기를 변형, 발전시키는 신고전주의 양식이 도입되었음을 알 수 있다. 선율면에 있어서는 언어자체가 갖는 억양과 강세에 선율이 자연스럽게 조화를 이루는 특징을 보이고 있으며, 화성과 리듬에 있어서는 화성적인 색채감을 매우 중시했고, 당김음과 재즈적인 요소의 사용을 통해 미국적인 음악의 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다.
