Abstract
Romanticism in the nineteenth century music represented it's idea as direct expression of human emotion and it presented free forms and new musical materials. In the nineteenth century, program music and on the other hand character pieces of poetic liricism were cultivated, but absolute music was also developed. Johaness Brahms(1833-1897) was a composer of Neoclassicism, who mixed his lirical and romantic sentiments with the form of classicism. He enlarged his musical techniques with traditional forms and evident structures, emphasis of main melody in correlation with each movement, a variety of rhythmical forms such as polyrhythm and Hemiola, and variation of meter, tempo, and accent. In this thesis, distinct elements in the piano music of Brahms are studied and "Sonata No.3 Op.5" is analysed for to study his technique of composition and musical characters. Op.5 is the third of three piano sonatas of Brahms, and consists of 5 movements; the 1st movement is taking the sonata form, the 2nd and 3rd ones are compound ternary, the 4th one taking two part form, and 5th one taking Rondo form. The main figures of thematic melodies presented in the 1st movement are used variously all through the whole movements. Contrary motion, parallel motion, sequence, chromatic, and conjunct motion are appeared many times. In the progression of harmony Neapolitan 6th, arpeggio, and non-harmonic chord are seen. Also his rhythms are presented with a variety of forms such as dotten notes, polyrhythm, hemiola, syncopation, and so on. Canon, imitation, sequence are used together. On close study of distinct qualities of "Piano Sonata No.3 Op.5" it is considered as a good example to search a number of musical character of Brahms in the respect of structure, relation of melody, harmony, scale, and rhythm.
