Abstract
Alcoholism is a family disease which could have serious effects not only on an alcoholic himself but on his family members. It is generally accepted that a parent's habitual drinking will affect his children in social, intelligent, and behavioral aspects through disfunctional family dynamics, and that the children may suffer heavy losses in healthy growth and social adjustment. One of the children's outstanding pathological characteristics is their readiness to drink. Many clinical researchers argue that those whose parents take to drink are likely to be alcoholics in their turns, and then potential troublemakers with alcohol. It is also argued that they tend to be early and serious drinkers. Arguements of this kind have helped make a general trend rising to regard the children as belonging to a pathological group, 2nd thus have put a vital social stigma on all of the children. Many researchers attempt to identify the personality characteristics of the children who grow to adjust themselves well even with the acoholic gene in their blood, as the results of increasing studies show that the children grow healthy in spite of their parents' alcoholism, and that there is no difference between the children of alcoholic and non-alcoholic parents in character, self-esteem, and alcoholic behavior. This paper aims to inquire into those variables which will tell the difference between the two groups of children. Accordingly, as variables to explain the healthy growth of the children of alcoholic parents, I have referred to Clare and Genest's - social support, stress coping behavior, and family environment - with a view to seeking out what difference those variables show with regard to the children's drinking or not. To fifty-two children - among whom thirty-two are drinkers and fourteen are nondrinkers - of the alcoholic parents who are in mental clinics throughout the country, I have applied Mann-Whitney U test to look into the possible differences in the three variables. The results are as follows. First, I have worked on whether social support differs according as the children drink or not. No distinctive and meaningful difference in statistics has been found in emotional, informational, tangible, and evaluative supports constituting four subdivisions of social support. Secondly, I have also examined whether any difference exists in stress coping behavior. No difference has been checked in the positive stress coping behavior. In the negative, however, I have sought out the differences by 0.46 to 29.00. This means that there is a tendency for the drinking children to cope with stress more negatively than those nondrinking. Thirdly, family environment has been examined without any result of statistically meaningful difference. The results of this research show that the personal stress coping behavior exercises greater influence than social or family environment. Therefore, it will be conducive to healthy growth and proper adjustment to educate the children of alcoholic parents in the concept of alcoholism and the cause of stress of their family members. It is also necessary to instruct detailed technics to manage and sublimate stress. Consequently, I dare to suggest that the subsequent studies should include not those whose parents are isolated in clinical settings, but those whose parents remain overlooked in the community. Till now, most researches have dealt with the severely damaged children of the alcoholic parents who are in clinical settings. Thus, if we define the results of such researches as the mere characteristics of all the children of alcoholic parents, we are likely to leave room for neglecting the children who adjust well, and so getting them branded as disgraceful. Most previous studies were conducted either on the supposition that all the children were one and the same, or in comparison of alcoholic parents' children with nonalcoholic. This would emphasize only the negative viewpoint on the former. I would like to suggest that the researches on the diverse characteristics of the alcohol-influenced children be done efficiently and effectively.
