영어의 소절구문

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 주어와 술어는 포함하지만 시제와 일치 형태소인 굴절접사나 불변화사 to를 포함하지 않는 소절의 구조적 특성과 통사적 범주를 밝히는데 있다. 일반적으로 소절은 술어가 주절동사로부터 의미역상 독립되는지 여부에 따라 보문소절(complement small clause)과 부가소절(adjuct small clause)로 분류되는데, 특히 보문소절의 구조가 기존 문법체계에서 어떻게 분석되었는지를 알아보고, 최소주의 이론(Minimalist Theory)에 근거하여 소절의 문제점을 해결하고 문법체계내에서 일관성 있게 설명할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 소절의 통사적 분석은 근본적으로 투사원리에 기초하며, 소절의 주어-술어관계(subject-predicate relation)는 모든 통사적 층위에서 준수되어야 한다는 것이다. Chomsky(1981, 1986b)와 Stowell(1983)에 의하면 이러한 주어-술어관계를 포착하기 위해 소절은 하나의 구성소를 이루는 것으로 보고, 주어를 명사구와 술어간의 구조적 관계에 의해서 정의한다. 반면에 Williams(1983)의 서술관계 분석은 소절의 구성소성을 인정하지 않으며 하나의 의미적 단위를 이루는 것으로 본다. Pollock(1989)의 굴절소 분할가설(Split INFL Hypothesis)의 도입으로 인하여 지정어-핵 일치(spce-head agreememt)관계로 격점검과 일치관계를 설명하게 된 최소주의 이론은 소절의 주어-술어관계를 정상절에서와 동일하게 포착할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 본 논문에서는 최소주의 이론이 소절 분석에 있어서 문법의 기본 구조인 핵계층관계(X-bar relation)로 통합될 수 있으며, 주어-술어관계를 정상절과 동일하게 분석할 수 있다는 가능성을 보여줌으로써 문법의 보편적인 원리(Universal Principle)로 소절에 대한 설명력을 강화했다는데 그 의의를 찾고자 한다.;The purpose of this thesis is to show the structural properties and syntactic category of small clauses, which involve subject-predicate relation but have neither inflectional affixes, nor infinitival particle "to". The small clause may be classified depending on whether the predicates of small clauses are thematically independent of their main verbs or not. It is called that the former is complement small clause and the latter is adjunct small clause. They syntactic analysis for small clauses are based on Projection Principle. Subject-predicate relation of small clauses must be uniformly satisfied at all syntactic levels. In order to capture this subject-predicate relation, Chomsky(1981, 1986b) and Stowell(1983) consider small clause as a constituent. The constituency analysis is defined by structural relation between noun phrase and predicative phrase. the predication analysis of Williams(1983), on the other hand, considers small clause proposition represented by taking a subject and its predicate as a semantic unit. Introducing to Pollock(1989)'s Split INFL Hypothesis, Minimalist theory makes it possible to resolve an asymmetry between nominative and objective case assignment based on government notion within GB syntax. The Minimalist theory is shown the possibility for intergrating the case assignment and subject-predicate relation of small clause into the X-bar relation. We try to show that this analysis strengthens the explanatory power on the small clause without introducing new stipulation.
