Abstract
Brahms의 『Viola Sonata No.2 in Eb Major, Op.120』은 필자의 졸업 연주회 곡목 중 하나로 그의 대표적인 Viola Sonata이며, 본 논문은 이를 분석 연구한 것이다. Brahms(1833-1897)는 24곡의 실내악곡을 남겼으며, 『Sonata No.2 in Eb Major Op.120』는 Brahms의 최후의 실내악곡인 동시에 최후의 Sonata에 해당된다. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze Johannes Brahms' Viola Sonata No.2 in Eb Major. More specifically, Brahms' life, his musical style especially, and his chamber music literature are reviewed. In terms of analysis of the Sonata No. 2. formal structure, harmony, typical rhythmic structure and musical style are examined. In the first chapter, Brahms' twenty-four chamber ensemble works are introduced in terms of tonality, movement structure, instrumentation, and musical characteristics. In the second chapter, Brahms' Sonata No.2 is analyzed. The following is the summary of the work: 1) First movement: Form: Sonata Allegro Key: Eb Major Meter: 4/4 Musical characteristics: Although, this piece is written in the key of Eb, the keys of Eb and Bb constantly aiternate, which can lead to confusion. 2) Second movement: Form: Scherzo Key: eb minor Meter: 3/4 Musical characteristics: Frequent modulations such as eb minor to B major, then back to original key. 3) Third movement Form: Theme and variations Key: Eb Major Meter: 6 / 8 Musical characteristics: The theme is short and simple. Each of the six variations has unique musical style such its rhythmic accents, harmonic variations, and textual changes. In conclusion, though this; piece was written during the last period of Brahms' musical life, it contains very fresh ideas of romanticism, and also authentic classical formal structure.
