Abstract
The modern Korean has long forgotten the traditional Korean culture due to the onslaught of popular Western culture. In this context, we must open our eyes to the fact that what is essentially Korean is international. With this renewed attention toward traditional culture, the process of creating a means of reflecting tradition in modernity is needed. Tradition is the element formed in the past but holding creative potential which can be realized in the present and inherently pointing toward future values. This is also the chain which binds the past to the future in a continuum, to be reborn with the changes in an evolving society. This study takes into account the efforts to modernize tradition by choosing the artistic inspiration and emotion which can be seen in the needlework of the Chosen dynasty. The motifs sewn into the embroidered pojagi are analyzed for their aesthetic value, symbolism, form, etc. and restructured to fit modern fashion design, creating a common ground on which tradition meets modernity. Thus we are able to carry on our traditional cultures and at the same time create a rejuvenated form of art which springs from traditional roots. In order to effectively display the various expressions of late Chosun dynasty embroidered pojagi according to modern tastes, a theoretical approach to the artwork precedes the actual selection of motifs to be recreated. The motifs were carefully chosen to simultaneously reflect the elements of modern design. A total of 8 complex artworks are the final result of the study. The following are the conclusions to the study. 1. The possibility of recreating traditional motifs in modern fashion design is fully demonstrated by the carefully chosen embroidered pojagi motifs used in the designs. 2. By interposing the traditional elements of design on modern Korean fashion, one can cultivate cultural pride and develop the traditional arts within the complex form as a new dimension of art. 3. The traditional elements used in modern design are what differentiates Korean fashion from the international world of fashion design the gives the designer more room to create a unique look. In order to successfully recreate traditional cultural elements in modern art, we must foremost protect and remember what is ours. The systematic study and analysis of traditional elements will lead to, not only simple copies of the traditional motifs, but an advanced modern definition of the Korean tradition which will surely benefit from international recognition.
