Abstract
1995 is the year which KNCC proclaimed as a "Jubilee for unification". The ground of the proclamation is that it has been 50 years since liberation from the Japanese imperialistic pressure and national division. The ground that the Old Testament's Jubilee motif was used in Korean natioal situation is, Bible itself is showing the Hermaneuitical shift of the Jubilee motif in Isaiah's proclamation or in the Gospel of Luke. At this point, we can recognize that Bible is used as a very important model for interpreting our situation. In the sense that the Pentateuch is frequently called as a "Torah"(it means teaching). we can think that one of it's functions is a glasses through which can be watched our reality. But not to speak Pentateuch, Old Testament speaks of Israel's past history. In addtion, W.Brueggemann indicated, it reports us the life of Israel related with the Land. It can be said that Yahweh, israel and the Land are the central subjects which Old Testament always had kept in mind. Israei's history is about the story that a rootless people who had become to get some Land have lived in the Land and have been thrown to all over the world. Pentateuch, the root of Israel's mentality shows us its interesting to the Land, Palestine exclusively. At this problem, in this thesis I am trying to affirm the interesting in the Land and to study the Land's theological meaning to Israel in the Pentateuch, especially in the narratives of patriarchal historyin the Yahwist' s layer, Deuteronomy' s paranesis and laws speaking of land. Since taking BHS as a the latest version, exception in need, this study did not treat the origins or the historical contexts of texts proper thoroughly. In addition, for coherence of the subject this thesis excluded the views of Creation theology, the Priestly writer and Elohist writer. The procedure of this thesis is as follows. Chapter Ⅱ deals with the words' usages indicating land and the theological meaning. Chapter Ⅲ is dealing with the description and theological weight of the Land in the Jahwhist's writing about the patriarchal narratives and in the Deuteronomy. Chapter Ⅳ deals with the relationship between laws and land, especially in the Jubilee and the Sabbatical law. Chapter Ⅴ summarizes the results obtained through this research and make conclusions. The major conclusions of this reaserch are as follows. Through the Pentateuch we can see the fact that the Land was the goal of israel's forefather's soujorning. The Land is worth of abandoning everything because God has promised to give it. Even though it was not a tangible reality but only a promise to Abraham, Yahwist emphsized this promise. This reflects the fulfillment in the David-Solomon period in which Yahwist had been working. The emphesized Land promise in the Yahwist's patriarchal narratives, means the reason to thank to Israel's God, Yahweh. In the Deuteronomy the Land is a Gift of God's gracious will. God gave the Land as a [unknown] which means inheritance or property and should be succeeded to the offsprings continuously. The Land is a ground for the People's rest. This is the rest from the enemies all around them, This Land is a outcome of the promise to the fathers. Thanks to their ancestors and God's grace, Israel can enjoy the undetermined gift. Since as a matter of fact Israel had no qualification to get this Land, Israel had to keep the laws not to lose it. The1 law was not a heavy burden but a easy way of life. In the Deuteronomic paranesis and law, we can see the prohibition of Idolatarty, sexual misconduct and unjustice. This thougtht is continuing in the relationship with land in the each Codes(C,D,H),too. We can also find out the Land's meaning in Israel. The Land is God's and Israel is only a soujorner who is depending on the owner's hospitality(Lev.25:23). So Israel have to do as the owner's order. The order is remembering the Land owner and all the people have the right to live in abundence of the land equally. To exploit the Land and neighbours is to deny the core of the law's divine will which liberate from all the economical, social, political pressure. Modern Industrial Korean society relatively seems to have nothing to do with land compared with in the Old testament era. Even more Israel's affactionate Land do so. If we could interpret that Israel's Land is symbolizing our national history, in Pentateuch we can get some identification between their hirtory of the Land and our past 50 years. So we could see that KNCC's proclamation of a "Jubilee for unification" will have meanings to us in this sense.
