일제시대 역사극 연구

Abstract

역사극은 작가의 역사의식을 통해 역사적 사실을 극화하는 것이다. 따라서 그 개념은 역사문학으로서의 보편성과 극문학의 특수성을 포괄하는 가운데 규정지워져야 한다. 역사극은 역사가 주는 진실성과 문학이 내포한 예술성을 동시에 나타내야 하며, 역사적 상황의 극적 갈등을 포착함으로써 현재적 시점에서 과거를 파악한다. 역사극은 3·1운동 이후 민족적, 역사적 자각이 강조되면서 대두하기 시작했다. 계몽적 연극관이 강조되고 연극에 대한 일제의 검열이 강화되던 연극사적 상황도 역사극의 형성에 영향을 끼쳤다. 작가의 역사의식은 역사를 극으로 형상화해내는 과정 가운데 드러나기 때문에, 극적 표현방식으로서 인물과 극적 갈등이 중요시된다. 극중 인물은 실제의 인물이나 허구의 인물로, 극적 갈등은 사회적 갈등이나 개인적 갈등으로 설정될 수 있으며, 이들은 각각의 성격에 따라 서로 다른 역사의식을 표현하는 데 적절하게 사용된다. 이에 따라 일제시대의 역사극에 나타난 역사의식을 4가지 범주로 나누어 살펴보았다. 일제시대 역사극 중에서 '계몽적 현실반영'의 역사의식을 드러낸 작품들은 역사적 영웅을 통해 일제치하의 현실을 반영하고 교훈적 주제를 표현한다. 그러나 사적 기록 안에 한정된 역사해석을 낳는 한편, 친일성을 표현하기 위한 방법으로 악용되기도 한다. '이념적 현실저항'의 역사극들은 역사적 민중항쟁을 극화하여 재창조된 인물을 통해 일제치하의 현실에 적극적으로 저항하는 작가의식을 표현하였으나, 미숙한 극작술과 일제의 검열 등으로 인해 설득력 있는 극을 이루지는 못하였다. '감상적 현실도피'의 역사극들은 왕조의 멸망사가 자아내는 비극미를 창출하였으나, 역사를 개인적인 문제로 한정시켜 해석함으로써 현실로부터 도피하였다. '통속적 소재주의'의 성격을 지닌 작품들은 역사를 단지 극적 배경으로만 설정하여 통속적인 흥미를 위해 역사를 남용한 결과가 되었다. 일제시대의 역사극은 직접적인 현실비판이 불가능했던 시대에 과거를 소재로 함으로써 작가의 현실인식을 표출하는 데 적절한 표현방식의 역할을 했다는 점에서 높이 평가될 수 있으며, 현실도피적 성향으로 현재적 관점에서 유리된 역사해석 또는 왜곡을 낳았다는 점에서 한계를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.;The historical drama is the literary work that the author dramatizes the historical fact through his consciousness of history. So the concept should be defined including the universality of historical literature and the pecularity of dramatic one. The historical drama should express both the truth of history and the artistic quality of literature. It picks up the dramatic conflict in the historical situation to understand the past in the viewpoint of the present. According as the national and historical self-consciousness has been emphasized since 3ㆍ1 movement, the historical drama under the Japanese imperialistic rule has started to rise. Korean theatrical situation in which the theatric viewpoint of enlightenment has been emphasized and the censorship of the Japanese imperialism has been strengthen, has had a influence on the formation of the historical drama. The author's consciousness of history is expose in the course of putting the historical fact into the form of drama. It is why characters and dramatic conflict are of great importance as the methods of dramatization. The character is choosen between the historical character and the created one, and the dramatic conflict between social conflict and personal one by the author. The each qualities of these materials are used for expressing the peculiar consciousness of history suitably. Therefore, in the thesis, I have classified the consciousness of history into the four categories in the historical dramas under the rule of Japanese imperialism. The first category of the historical dramas that has expressed the consciousness of history for 'enlightening and reflecting the realities', has represented the realities under the rule of Japanese imperialism and the subject of the moral through the historical hero. But it has interpretated the historical fact in the limit of historical records and been made a wrong use of advocating the pro-Japanese politics. Secondly, the historical dramas for 'the ideological resistance to the realities' have dramatized the popular struggle of the history and expressed the author's consciousness through the created character to resist the situation under the rule of the Japanese imperialism. But they have not become the persuasive drama because of unskilled drama-turgy and the censorship of the Japanese imperialism. Thirdly, the historical dramas of 'the sentimental escapism' have shown the artistry of the tragedy through the fall of a dynasty. But they have interpretated the historical fact in the limit of the individual problem and so escaped from realities. The last category of the historical dramas has interpretated the (이후 원문누락)
