Abstract
This study is to explore the effects and the contents of Korean experienced counselors' in-session self-awareness, analyzing the results to make practical application of the counselor education and supervision. 14 pairs of counselor and client each had a 30-minute-session, being video recorded. Watching the tape together right after the session, counselors recalled the level/helpfulness, contents of the self-awareness and clients evaluated the helpfulness of the counselor intervention. And the raters analyzed the contents of counselors' self-awareness into the counselor's involvement ratio. The hypotheses are as follows : First, the more the counselors have the self-awareness, the more they will think that self-awareness are helpful. Second, the more the counselors have the self-awareness, the ratio of counselors' involvement will be higher. Third, the more the counselors have the self-awareness, the more clients will perceive that the interventions of the counselor are helpful. Last, the relationship between the contents of counselors' self-awareness and the clients' evaluation will be explored. The results are as follows : First, the more the counselors had the self-awareness, the more they thought that self-awareness were helpful. Second, the relation between counselors' level of self-awareness and involvement to clients appeared to be the quadratic equation. When the level of counselors' self-awareness was the lowest or highest, the ratio of involvement was high. Third, the relation between the level of self-awareness and clients' perceived helpfulness also appeared to be the quadratic equation. When the level of counselors' self-awareness was the lowest or highest, the clients' perceived helpfulness was high. And there was no meaningful difference in the clients' perceived helpfulness according to the contents(thinking/feeling) of counselor's self-awareness. The results of these findings mean that the effects of counselors' self-awareness can be maximized in both cases : firstly in case that counselors have automatic responses without intentional effort by trained expertise, and secondly in case that counselors intentionally try to use their self-awareness effectively. That result suggests that the counselors need enough training procedures being able to be sensitive toward their inner experience, for utilizing themselves as the most effective tools. And we can see that the enough clinical training procedures should be applied to counselors to develope their own therapeutic responses to be automated. Additionally, the trainers of the novice counselors should focus on developing the self-awareness for the education curriculum.
