시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>에 대한 장르적 접근

Abstract

Sitcom(or situation comedy) introduced in 1993 has been a popular genre in Korean television. But recently, the number of Korean sitcom has fallen sharply. Although it comes to this quantitative crisis, Korean sitcom is in a transition period seeking qualitative developments and has changed by fresh sitcoms such as <Old Miss Diary>, <Hello, Francesca> and <Soulmate>. Hereupon, this study investigated the characteristics and possibilities of Korean sitcom through a genre approach to <Old Miss Diary>. This study analyzed genre conventions and changes of sitcom <Old Miss Diary> and then, discussed the sociocultural implications of genre characteristics of sitcom <Old Miss Diary>. Research method was based on Chatman's narrative analysis. Accordingly, research questions are as following: 1. What are the genre conventions of television sitcom <Old Miss Diary>? 2. What are the genre changes of television sitcom <Old Miss Diary>? 3. What are the sociocultural implications of genre characteristics of <Old Miss Diary>? As a result, sitcom <Old Miss Diary> showed genre changes in various side such as narrative structure, characters, discourse(how to express) and laughing mechanism as well as made use of genre conventions of sitcom. Especially, the dailiness of narrative and verisimilitude of characters in sitcom <Old Miss Diary> strengthened the reality of drama. Also, it applied properly genre conventions of romantic-comedy drama to family sitcom and made genre blending of family sitcom series and romantic-comedy drama serials. And it delivered simultaneously 'Love Story' and 'Family Story' that have made strong appeal to Korean audiences. In the last analysis, it appears that achieved the inner evolution of Korean television sitcom genre and <Old Miss Diary> established a localization television sitcom in Korea. In addition to, this study concluded that the transformations of the Korean television sitcom reflected the change of the Korean society and culture. Reflecting improvements of women's right and social status, it represents new image of woman(contra-sexual) and a shifted man-woman relationship by older woman-younger man couple. And despite a woman, a frank and powerful image of old age women who have become existence of asexuality from social distinction describes positively. In other words, it attempts to destroy social prejudice about gender and age by playing spinsters and old age women who were neglected in media as heroine. After all, <Old Miss Diary> embodies positive values of social 'Minority' with one man who does domestic work without a job and the other man who is retired early as well as the old age women and spinsters. Even though sitcom <Old Miss Diary> is an advanced text that has social issues from diverse discriminations about gender, age, class and job, it is a conservative text because it consolidates 'Familism' and 'Love Mythology' that are traditional ideas of our society. This is an ideological ambiguity of sitcom genre that generates some kinds of ironic and satirical laugh by representing characters or narratives that violate the existent traditional values and social prejudices. Nevertheless, sitcom <Old Miss Diary> is an idle type of media-text that needs to show the sociocultural diversity and warm concerns about social minority.;1993년, 가족시트콤 <오박사네 사람들>로 시작된 한국의 텔레비전 시트콤은 1990년대 후반과 2000년대 초반 한국의 텔레비전을 장악하며 인기장르로 급부상하였다. 그러나 최근 한국의 시트콤은 제작편수라는 양적인 측면에서 위기 상황에 처해있는 한편, <올드미스다이어리>를 비롯하여 <안녕, 프란체스카>와 <소울메이트> 등과 같은 시트콤을 통해 한국의 시트콤은 질적인 발전과 변화를 추구하고 있는 과도기적 시기에 있다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 KBS 일일시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>에 대한 장르적 접근을 통해 한국형 시트콤의 특성과 가능성을 모색해보고자 하였다. 이에 본 연구는 다음의 연구문제를 바탕으로 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>의 인기 에피소드 10편에 대한 서사분석을 통해 <올드미스다이어리>의 장르적 특성과 그것이 가지는 사회문화적 함의를 파악하고자 하였다. 첫째, 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>의 장르적 관습은 무엇인가? 둘째, <올드미스다이어리>가 보여주는 시트콤으로서의 장르적 변화는 무엇인가? 셋째, <올드미스다이어리>의 장르관습과 장르변화가 가지는 사회문화적 함의는 무엇인가? 그 결과, <올드미스다이어리>는 시트콤의 장르관습을 적절히 활용하면서도 서사구조와 등장인물, 담화 등 다양한 측면에서 장르변화를 보이고 있는 것을 파악할 수 있었다. <올드미스다이어리>는 한 에피소드 당 두 개 내지 세 개의 내러티브를 각각 병렬적으로 연결시키는 서사구조를 중심으로 ‘사건발생-해결(혹은 실패)’이라는 시트콤의 전통적 플롯인 순환적 구조와 애정관계의 발전과 변화라는 열린 구조의 두 가지 양상을 보이며, 로맨틱코미디 시리얼즈(serials)와 가족시트콤 시리즈(series)가 혼재되어 있는 장르혼합의 성격을 가지고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 또한, 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>는 일상적 내러티브와 있음직한 인물, 사실적 배경을 사용하여 리얼리티(reality)를 강화시키고 있는 것으로 보인다. 그리고 이를 통해 과거 사기와 속임수의 서사전략과 인물들의 과장되거나 기이한 행위로 인해 발생하던 상황적 웃음과는 달리, 리얼리티를 통해 시청자들로 하여금 공감대가 형성된 동의의 웃음과 성별과 성역할, 나이에 대한 고정관념을 파괴함으로써 발생하는 풍자적 성향의 웃음을 발생시키고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 또한, 리얼리티가 강화된 내러티브 중심의 전개로 인해 감소될 수 있는 재미를 담화차원의 기법을 적극 활용함으로써 색다른 웃음을 발생시키고 있었다. 특히, <올드미스다이어리>가 이전의 시트콤에 비해 큰 차이를 보인 부분이 바로 담화기법의 다양화인데, 애니메이션 기법과 실사에 색을 입히거나 글자를 삽입하는 등의 CG 작업을 다양하게 활용하여 웃음을 발생시키는 하나의 기제로 사용하였으며, 시트콤의 필수장치였던 웃음이펙트를 과감하게 배제하여 시청자의 자연스러운 웃음을 발생시키고자 하였다. 웃음이펙트 대신 에코가 강하게 들어간 뻐꾸기 소리와 여성의 감탄사 등과 같은 코드음을 사용하고, ABBA의 곡들로 채워진 배경음악을 다양하게 활용하였다. 이처럼 <올드미스다이어리>는 담화차원의 색다른 변화와 내러티브와 인물의 일상성을 통해 리얼리티를 강화하고, 가족시트콤과 로맨틱코미디 드라마의 장르관습을 적절하게 활용하여 ‘사랑이야기’와 ‘가족애’라는 한국 시청자에게 소구력이 높은 주제를 동시에 담아냄으로써 텔레비전 시트콤의 한국화를 이루어낸 것으로 보인다. 이외에도, <올드미스다이어리>는 미디어 텍스트로서 다양한 사회문화적 함의를 지니고 있는데 특히, 여성의 사회적·경제적 지위향상으로 인해 새로이 등장한 여성상인 ‘콘트라-섹슈얼(contra-sexual)’의 이미지는 물론, 연상녀-연상남 커플을 통해 달라진 남녀관계의 위치를 재현해내어 새로운 여성의 모습을 담아내고 있다. 또한, 여성임에도 불구하고 사회적인 차별로 인해 무성(無性)의 존재가 되어버린 노년 여성의 당당하고 솔직한 모습을 긍정적으로 그려내기도 하였다. 이를 통해 미디어에서 소외되었던 여성들인 노처녀와 노년 여성을 주인공으로 등장시켜 미디어가 재현하는 대상의 폭을 넓히고 성별과 나이에 대한 사회적 편견을 파괴하려는 시도를 보여주었다는 점에서 그 함의를 찾을 수 있다. 노년 세대 외에도 다양한 사회적 차별 속에서 소외당한 채 퇴직한 가장과 직업 없이 가사노동을 하는 남성 등 사회적 마이너리티가 가진 긍정적인 가치를 따뜻한 시선으로 담아냄으로써 특별하지 않은 소박한 것의 의미를 구현해내고 있다. 이처럼, 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>가 다양한 인물들을 통해 차별로 인한 사회적 이슈를 담고 있는 진보적 텍스트이다. 하지만, 우리사회의 전통적 가치인 가족과 사랑에 대한 신화를 강화하는 보수적 텍스트로서의 역할도 하는 이데올로기적으로 이중적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 이는 기존의 전통적 가치에 위배되거나 사회적 편견을 깨뜨리는 인물이나 사건을 재현함으로써 풍자적 성향의 웃음을 발생시키는 시트콤이 가진 이데올로기적 양면성이라 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>가 가지는 사회문화적 다양성의 재현과 사회적 마이너리티에 대한 따뜻한 시선은 우리 사회의 미디어 텍스트가 궁극적으로 담아내야할 이상형이며, 이러한 방식을 통해 유쾌하고 신선한 웃음과 감동을 제공하는 것이 텔레비전 장르에서 마이너리티의 위치에 서 있는 시트콤이라는 장르가 추구해야할 방향이라 할 수 있다. 더불어 한국 시트콤의 위기를 극복하기위해 본 연구의 결과로 드러난 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>의 장르변화와 시트콤 <올드미스다이어리>가 지니고 있는 사회문화적 함의에 주목할 필요가 있으며, 이를 통해 <올드미스다이어리>가 구축해놓은 한국형 시트콤의 새로운 발전상을 모색할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
