자기서사(Self-Narrative)를 통해서 본 레즈비언 정체성 구성에 관한 연구

Abstract

한국사회에 레즈비언 운동조직과 레즈비언 담론이 등장한지 10여년의 시간이 흘렀지만 레즈비언에 대한 연구들은 레즈비언으로 자신을 정체화하고(identifying) 레즈비언의 삶을 살아가는 이들이 자신의 레즈비언 정체성과 경험을 어떻게 해석하고 있는지에 대해 주목하지 않았다. 이에 본 연구는 레즈비언의 경험이 어떻게 구성되며, 레즈비언은 어떠한 삶을 살아가는지에 대한 레즈비언의 이야기들이 부재하다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 한국사회에 1995년 이후 레즈비언을 만날 수 있는 다양한 장들이 형성된다. 레즈비언들이 참여할 수 있는 다양한 형태의 커뮤니티가 형성되었지만, 이러한 커뮤니티는 접근 가능한 환경과 조건을 가진 레즈비언에게 한정된 공간이었다. 이에 본 연구는 우선 레즈비언 커뮤니티는 기존 레즈비언 커뮤니티 개념에 레즈비언들이 '관계망(network)'의 형태로 존재하고 유지되고 있는 지지그룹(supporting groups)이 포함되어야 한다는 입장을 갖는다. 레즈비언 커뮤니티를 레즈비언의 '관계망'의 개념으로 확장할 때, 과거 알음알음의 방식으로 자신들의 모임을 만들어갔던 그 때의 잊혀진 커뮤니티를 포함할 수 있다. 또한 현재에도 이러한 형태로 지속되고 있을지 모르는 알려지지 않은 레즈비언들의 모임을 포함할 수 있게 한다. 이 때의 레즈비언 커뮤니티는 작은 관계망일 수도 있고, 온라인 모임이거나, 친목 모임의 형태를 띨 수도 있는 레즈비언이라는 이름으로 묶인 다양한 모양새를 갖춘 모든 모임을 총칭한다. 레즈비언들은 공동체에 참여하면서 자신들의 문화를 생산해 간다. 또한 이러한 커뮤니티를 통해 자신의 레즈비언 정체성을 확인받고, 정체성을 확장(aggrandizement)해 간다. 레즈비언들의 자생적 모임들을 커뮤니티의 개념에 포함할 때 지금까지 이름 붙여지지 못했던 모임들에 레즈비언의 공간이라는 이름을 부여하고, 그들의 문화를 다시금 평가하고 레즈비언들의 자생적인 모임들을 역사적 공간에 배치할 수 있는 가능성을 남기게 된다. 또한 자생적 커뮤니티를 형성하고, 그 속에서 자신들의 문화를 만들어가고 있는 이들의 경험을 레즈비언의 경험으로 가시화할 수 있게 된다. 이에 본 연구는 레즈비언은 어떠한 모순과 갈등의 지점에서, 어떠한 근거들을 통해 자신을 레즈비언 정체화하고 있으며, 자신이 레즈비언이라는 믿음을 어떻게 수행하여 레즈비언 정체성을 구성하는가라는 연구물음을 갖는다. 이러한 연구물을 통해 한 레즈비언이 구술하는 자기 경험의 서사(self-narrative)를 통해 자기 경험과 정체성에 대한 해석을 드러내어, 레즈비언 정체성의 구성성을 설명하고 레즈비언 삶에 대한 또 다른 서사를 구성하고자 하였다. 특히 본 연구에서 레즈비언의 경험은 레즈비언의 경험을 가진 실재(reality)로 드러내는 것이거나, 자신을 레즈비언으로 정체화하는 순간 완성되는 것이 아니라, 자신의 삶을 '레즈비언적으로' 구성하려는 수행성을 발휘하는 과정 속에서 구성되는 것으로 바라보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 본론은 자신을 레즈비언으로 정체화하고, 레즈비언의 삶을 살아가는 이정인의 자기 경험의 서사를 재구성하는 방식으로 구성하였다. 이정인은 자신의 레즈비언 정체성과 레즈비언으로서의 경험을 삶의 전 과정 속에서 이야기한다. 이정인은 어떤 사건을 통해 자신을 남들과 다르다고 인식하게 되었는지, 또한 지금의 '안정적인' 레즈비언 정체성을 구성하게 되었는지를 이야기한다. 또한 어떤 계기를 통해 지금의 파트너를 만나게 되고, 나아가 자신의 정체성을 확장할 수 있는 지지그룹(supporting group)을 형성하게 되었는지, 그리고 그 커뮤니티에서는 자신들의 문화를 어떻게 만들어 가고 있는지를 이야기한다. 레즈비언의 경험은 어떤 면에서 공식적으로 알려지지 않았고 말해지지 않은 삶이기 때문에 레즈비언으로서의 삶을 살아가는 과정은 모순과 갈등의 연속이며, 그 속에서 레즈비언 정체성은 구성된다. 이때 레즈비언으로 정체화하는 것은 모순과 갈등 속에서 레즈비언이라는 정체성을 획득하는 것으로 이해하는 것이 아니라, 레즈비언에 대한 자기 해석을 통해 레즈비언의 삶을 '의지적 선택하는 행위'로 이해해야 한다. 이는 레즈비언이 구술하는 자신의 정체성구성과 레즈비언으로서의 삶의 이야기는 단순한 레즈비언으로서의 지나온 과거를 회상하는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 이정인이 구술하는 자기 경험의 이야기는 레즈비언에 대한 자기 해석을 통해서 소환해온 기억들이기 때문에 그 속에는 자신을 레즈비언으로 정체화하고 있는지에 대한 근거들 즉 해석의 내용들을 담겨 있게 된다. 또한 이는 자신이 레즈비언이라는 믿음을 끊임없이 구성해하는 과정으로 이해해야 한다. 한국사회에서 "여성을 사랑하는 여성"의 삶이 이성애적 젠더 규범의 힘의 무게에 눌려 자신의 정체성을 부정하고, 자신의 경험을 고통의 연속으로 이해하고 있다고 단정할 수 없다. 이들은 자신의 정체성을 '다름으로 구성하여' 이성애적 젠더질서에 포섭되지 않는 경계에 자신을 위치시켜, 이성애적 젠더 규범과 질서의 '불안정성을 드러내는 행위성을 실천'한다. 그러므로 이러한 다른 정체성 다른 삶을 살아가기 위해 삶의 전 과정 속에서 펼쳐지는 전략들은 레즈비언의 정체성 구성과정이자 수행과정으로 읽혀져야 하는 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 레즈비언의 정체성을 수행의 과정으로 이해하여 레즈비언 정체성의 구성과정에 주목하여, 일상 속에서 발현하고 실천하고 있는 레즈비언의 행위성을 부각하고, 자신을 레즈비언으로 정체화하는 이들의 삶과 경험에 힘을 부여하고자 했다는 의의를 갖는다.;Lesbian movement groups and discourses have been in Korean society for as long as 10 years or so. In the mean time, there have been lesbian studies which had little attention to not only how lesbians were identifying themselves as 'lesbians' but how they construe their identity and experiences. So this study starts to question how their experiences are made up and how they live their lesbian life. It is 1995 since when a various meetings of lesbians held in Korean society. So lesbians were able to join a variety of get-together, yet which is only available to lesbians around. In this context, I argue they are supporting groups for lesbians to be part of the concept of 'community'. Lesbian gatherings, to the extent of that, are be able to recalled, which formed by those who had ever knew one another and yet dismissed. Gatherings unknown, at the very moment, would be included in the category of community as well. As it were, it is named 'lesbian community', no matter what if a great or small one, connecting through Internet or meeting in person, and a friendly society or political one. Taking part in those groups, lesbians produce their own cultures in them. They also confirm and aggrandize their sexual identity. Including all kinds of lesbian gatherings is naming, therefore, in political ways and reevaluates their cultures, and not least spontaneous meetings can be in history. It also enables experiences of lesbians to be visualized in there. It asks what kind of contradictions or struggles in identifying lesbians they go through, on what grounds they make out their sexual identity, and how they perform to be lesbians. To this question, I try to figure out answers from the self-narrative of a lesbian containing their own interpretation on the identity and experiences. Consequently, this means to show the identity of lesbian is constructed by which I would form another lesbian life story. Lesbian identity is not an innate or essential but shaped in theprocess of performing to be it on one's will. This study focuses on the way Lee Jeong-In identifies herself as lesbian and self-narrative of her life. She describes her sexual identity and experiences based on the scale of her whole life. She also narrates not only how to find herself different from others but how to get the determinant identity. She talks about through what event her partner is with and her communities around at the moment, and how to make cultures in communities. Unknown and unsaid in Korean society, lesbian experiences are formed through and full of conflicts and contradictions in part. That is why the identity of lesbian is not established at once but 'a decision of her own choosing' from self-interpretation of lesbianness. That is because the identity and life story a lesbian speaks are not just confined to in the past but brought back after putting her own construction on lesbianness. The narration is, therefore, about on what ground she makes up her identity and shows a lesbian herself keeps performing and framing incessantly. This also does not means that all lesbians deny their identity as lesbian and understand it just a long train of misfortunes under the pressure of heterosexual society. They rather locate themselves in-between and out of gender norms to find unsettledness of the heterosexual system. As a result, this study expects to empower experiences of one who identifies as lesbian by shedding light on her agency in daily life.
