Abstract
This thesis is a study on Robert Muczynski (b. 1929)’s「Suite for Piano, Op. 13」, a part of the repertoires of this author’s recital for the completion of Master’s degree. In this thesis, the author searches general characters of Muczynski’s music and ultimately aims at the understanding of musical idiom through the analysis of Muczynski’s work. The 20th century was a time that the various streams coexisted rather than a single main stream. In the music, various musical streams coexisted, too, and the new music, based on the old one, came into the 20th century. The epoch-making events were both escaping from functional tonality and a trial to be self-renewal from functional tonality. When we come into the music of numerous composers, we certainly become to know the musical features of the 20th century. Muczynski was also one of them, who had the features of 20th century, but was classified as one of neo classicism composers who applied an idiom of the 20th century, not using atonalism or twelve-tone technique prevailed at that time as it is, but composing the music with traditional tone. In brief, he made best use of the traditional form or material for music, but not used itself as it is, by modifying it into proper tone suitable for the 20th century. The style of Muczynski has been influenced by his teacher, Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977) and established as his own style. This thesis showed the general features of Muczynski’s piano work and summarized musical idiom of Muczynski in the 20th century through the musical analysis of 「Suite for Piano Op. 13」. Muczynski pursued a tonal music and used lyric melodies together with dynamic rhythms and percussion styled factors as well as technique such as fast passages and melodious skips. Additionally, his music was well transferred to performers by showing detailed articulations, dynamics, use of pedal and expressive markings, and so on. Judging from the point of these views, Muczynki is one of leading composers in the late 20th century and we can say that the 「Suite for Piano Op. 13」 is one of the his masterpieces, which well reflected his musical expression generally.
